Hi
Looking for Murdoch Muir age 14 in the 1841 census with his parents William and Elizabeth and possible siblings. I have him living on his own in Glasgow age 24 in 1851 but he was born in Kilmarnock hence my prediciment of where to search for him. So do I look for 3 x great grandpa in Glasgow or kilmarnock or Glasgow

Can anyone help please?

Hi Heather,
Murdoch doesn't appear to be in Glasgow 1841, so maybe he's still in Ayrshire.
FreeCen hasn't as yet completed Kilmarnock 1841 - details at
http://www.gavin-service.com/~freecen/

Hi Heather,
Jim Bundy has very kindly transcribed the 1841 census Kilmarnock to the Ayrshire Rootsweb pages last month.
But a quick search didn't show your Murdoch.

Jim's 5 posts are just over halfway down.

Hi Heather,
Just realised i'd misled you re the 1841 Kilmarnock Census - Jim Bundy hasn't transcribed all of it.
So it's still a chance that Murdoch is in the town.

Hi Heather,
You may have this by now, but in case not.
This looks your Murdoch MUIR and family in 1841 (from FreeCen).
Seems the family were in the town of Ayr, not Kilmarnock.

Hello Jack
Many Thanks for looking for my family in Freecen I had found them just recently but can't find them in Ayr in 1851. There is a family in Lanark that could be them but it will have to wait til I have more credits.
This is my family in 1841 but in the 1861/1871 census Murdoch says he's born Kilmarnock. I have done searches for the children's births and can't find them and that is not putting in any place to search but doing the whole of Scotland with no luck.

Hi Heather,
You'll find William & family are still in the town of Ayr 1851, but he's as MAIRS;
There is only one William MAIRS age 50 in Ayr town - so he should be easily found on SP.
With him is wife Elizabeth 45 & 5 children, also a gr-son....
I'm 99% sure the family are still in Ayr 1861, with William as MAIR...but still aged 50....
And wife Elizabeth also aged 50 & 1 child, and still with them is what looks very like the gr-son, but with a surname change....
William's occupation is as a cooper, not a riddle maker (allied trades?); and the family have the same birthplaces as 1851.
Again, only one William MAIR age 50 in Ayr town 1861.
If you've any trouble with "No Image" on SP, then let me know and i'll get transcriptions to you.

William is deceased by 1875 when his son dies and is down on that cert as a cooper.
