Hi everyone,
May I have some help deciphering this Census entry, please? It is the first entry I need: George & Elizabeth Willcock. Are the township, Wittin & the parish ,Great Budworth? Is Emma Wood a niece? I can’t discern what the professions are (housekeeper, I can guess at) or where they each originate. I suspect that of Elizabeth is from Burton? Thanks, alysone

I've verified that Burton and Hartford are actual places in Chesire, but can't find anything that even comes close to the first place name.

Frances beat me to it and I agree with most of her interpretation. I could see he was some kind of dealer, but couldn't see flour dealer.
I think George's place of birth is possibly Whatcroft, Cheshire....it's more easily seen on the 1861 census where he has a wife and child...if you want the transcription for 1861 let me know (maybe you prefer to search yourself).
I thought at first mother Elizabeth was born in Swinton but wasn't convinced with the "S"...now that I see Burton from Frances, I can see Burton.
Agree fully with Emma the niece.

I used to live a few miles from that area of Cheshire, so I can add some "local" knowledge.
The census address should just be Witten (probably Witton) street. The '10' in the first column is the schedule number of the property in the enumerator's round, not the house number.
Witton has been absorbed into Northwich, although there still is a minor-league football (soccer) team Witton Albion. On the Old Maps site ( www.old-maps.co.uk ) you can find Witton at co-ordinates 366300,374300.
Whatcroft is a small hamlet on the Trent and Mersey canal a few miles south-east of Northwich, and can be found at 367800,369900.
Hartford is just outside Northwich to the south-west.
Although there are (at least) 2 Burtons in Cheshire, both are some distance away, and the writing looks to have another letter. Therefore, I think that Elizabeth is from Barnton, just outside Northwich to the north-west.
There is a good Wikipedia entry for Northwich, which helps a little with Witton.

Well, I am further ahead on understanding this census entry than before I posted it to TS.
Thanks also, John, for the geography lesson. The assumption would be that Elizabeth wouldn't have moved far? They were married 23 Jan. 1813 at St John Knutsford, Cheshire. Best wishes, alysone
