Census .....

Post by crayspond » Sun Jul 01, 2007 12:03 pm

I have been tracing the whereabouts of Devines/Flannigan in my family and thought i was doing quite well until the mother Bridget Flannigan(nee Devine) died in 1896 age 36. The husband was Thomas Flannigan born c 1860 probably Ireland. They lived with her parents as at 1891 census and at that time no children are recorded (i checked next page too). She then died in 1896 (5 years later). They definitely had at least 3 children - my grandmother being one of them - Annie, she was born 18/5/1886 in the Gorbals. I think the other 2 were James and Thomas.
My problem is from the 1891 census to the 1901 (Bridget dying in between) i have no idea what happened to them. I was sure they would turn up in the 1901 census as a family but i have trawled the names and only come up with
Annie Flannigan census 1901 644/13/030/13 022 84 Nithsdale Road Pollokshields servant to a family there and age 16 which ties in with her DOB.
I am looking for ideas really, i have tried the usual - linking with the inlaws names etc but no luck. I had to stop for a while as i was spending a fortune on Scotlandspeople. The families all lived in the Gorbals area.
I had an idea that the kids might have been put in a home or the poorhouse but as i am not in Glasgow i can't get to visit the Mitchell Library.
Anyone with any ideas ? or suggestions i would be grateful.
Thanks

Hello,

I'll have a look next time I'm at The Mitchell.

Could be a week or two though.

Kind regards,

Hi Annette M
Any help is most grateful and as i found out from doing family research, things can take a while!
The 1901 census has her mother(Bridget Devine) and brother(Martin) in South Stirling St, Gorbals but no Thomas Flannigan or children living there.

Hi Crayspond,

Have you had a look at Thomas's death certificate? There is a good probability that one of his offspring was the informant to the Registrar.

Also, for the 1901 census, have you looked at Thomas Flanigan in Gorbals (note - only one N in the middle of the surname).

A wildcard search for Thomas Flan*g*n age 38 to 45 will show you a few spelling variations to consider.

All the best,

Hi Andrew P,

Result!!! you are a marvel. I used the wildcard and came up with 2 identical Thomas Flannigans' of the same age. As i am a true scot, i did not want to waste 5 credits so i went back to the census and searched for Martin (son) and it was a match. There was also James and Annie as i thought.
Next is his death cert which is a bit more difficult as there is no Thomas Flannigan in the Gorbals. The nearest is Govanhill which could be possible.
Anyway thanks for the help - my first posting request and it has been a success. What a great site.
