question re census .....

Post by crayspond » Sun Jul 08, 2007 10:16 am

I am now doing some research on my husband's family - he is a bit like me in that they (Purcell) came over from Ireland. If anyone is interested he has posted on the Ireland site with regard to finding some info.
I have John Purcell m Annie Gray 31/12/1863 in Calton/Glasgow. In 1871 they are in Rose St with 4 kids - 2 of the kids were born in Ireland Mary and William.(Although Annie , the eldest was born in Glasgow, this of course may be a census error)
Can i assume they had a couple of kids in Ireland before they were married, explaining why they married in 1864 in Glasgow?. Again alas no Place name in Ireland. They appear again in 1881 with 2 more kids - it still lists 2 as being born in Ireland and the eldest Annie is not listed.
Anyone any ideas?

Looks like they married in Scotland, had one child here and then over to Ireland where they had another two, then back to Glasgow.

Thanks Annette M,
I never seems to have much luck with the Index - obviously i am not doing the right searches! You are probably right about them going back. Great to see Dublin as the place where they were born as well! Can this info be relied on do you think? re Dublin being the birthplace?
Should i post you privately or not for things like this (new at postings).

Hello again,

I found the children using a parent search at the family search site
Insert the father's and mother's names in the appropriate boxes and nothing else. The younger children don't appear in the list as they were born after 1875.

I'm sure there must be instructions for searching the IGI somewhere on the board but I can't find it at the moment - maybe somebody else will.

You are lucky the Irish children were born at this time and yes you can rely on the info as they are both extracts.

Unless the info you want to discuss is sensitive I would keep posting in the forum as everybody can see it then and perhaps come up with more answers.

Kind regards,
Annette M
