Can you help me with this. please?

"but sleeping chamber Ternemny" is what it looks like.

This is written beside the entry for 12 year old William McCourach in the 1841 census for Rothiemay. His family lived at Inshcorsie. He's listed as an Ag Lab so I guess he must have been working on that day at a neighbouring farm, Ternemny. What does it actually say though? And why is it noted in this way?

My guess, without seeing it, is perhaps that the head of that household mentioned William as being in the household perhaps because he usually stayed there but was not there on that particular night - and gave the excuse saying where he was on that night - sleeping elsewhere. Not really what was supposed to happen; only persons IN the household on census nigth should have been enumerated as being there. But that is only a guess based on what you have told us.

Well how very annoying. The format the documents are provided in by SP is not supported by the TS Gallery! Sigh.
I've converted it to a jpeg but it still doesn't seem to like it. Seems the only solution is scan and do it from there. As if this hobby wasn't labour-intensive enough!

Hi Dorothy,

The native format of the censuses on ScotlandsPeople is tif (or tiff) and these can be uploaded to the TalkingScot gallery. It must be your download that is converting it to jpg. If you use the direct download method of viewing in ScotlandsPeople it uses your PC's viewing software rather than one of ScotlandsPeople's viewer and should retain it in its native format.

On the other hand, a birth certificate you have just uploaded made it there in jpg format. That must have been converted from its native jpg when you downloaded it from ScotlandsPeople. The same method should work for your 1841 census page.

It looks like out sleeping chamber - could it mean that he slept in the barn rather than the house. I admit to guessing, but it's my best effort.

It looks to me as though the first "Out sleeping chamber" on the left page belongs to the address from the page before.

Then the address is "Ternemny" with several people listed running over to the right page, then another "Out sleeping chamber" followed by another address being Ramsburn.

Looks like there were main houses on each farm and sleeping quarters in outbuildings.
