Need help with 1901 census .....

Post by CathieL » Thu Aug 16, 2007 5:37 pm

Can anyone give me any suggestions that would help find Barbara Corrigan on the 1901 census. I have only her marriage certificate to go on.
She married James Campbell 9th April 1904 in Lochee, Burgh of Dundee
when she was 18 years old.
I had no trouble tracing James Campbell back, his family were from Bridgeton for a few generations.
I have tried Corrigan, Carrigan, Kerrigan and a few combinations with no result. I cannot find a birth for her and as she died in Glasgow in the sixties I can't look for that.
If I could find her on the census then I would be able to look for her birth.
Any ideas at all would be most welcome [sigh]
Regards
Cathie

Hi Cathie

What were her parents names and occupation from her MC...and were they still living at that time?

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean
Barbara's parents were William Corrigan Iron worker and Jessie Corrigan maiden name Maxwell. They were both alive.

Hi

Can't see her anywhere on the 1901 but looks as if she is in Glasgow and stated to be born in Glasgow in the 1891. Her parents are given as William and Jane.

Anne

But that person appears never to have been born!!

Rats!! Thought I had found her in 1901 in Edinburgh but her mother's maiden name appears to be Raeburn.

Right! Think I may have a result.

Barbara Maxwell was born 30th August 1885 in Springburn Road to Jane Maxwell daughter of a Wood Merchant. She is illegitimate and no father's name is given.

The self same Jane married William Thomson Corrigan, Iron Borer, on 21st January 1887 in Glasgow. His parents are Michael Corrigan (deceased) and Margaret Corrigan m.s. Thomson. Her parents are Robert Maxwell, Wood Merchant (deceased) and Barbara Leckie formerly Maxwell m.s. Fulton. An Elizabeth Maxwell is a witness. ? A sister of Jane.

I think this may be your girl and I hope it is. Still can't find her on the 1901 census.

Think I've found your William Corrigan as Carrigan in 1881 in Glasgow as grandson in the house of Moses Thomson. Certainly worth a look. The address is 9 Stirling Street, St. Paul.

His father and possibly his mother and some sibs are there too.

Still the 1901 census in both Scotland and England is drawing a blank for me as is a death for mother, Jane/Jessie. No sign of an emigration either though that I can see. Wrong again Jane as Jean dies in Drymen in 1933 though the parents are not quite right but near as damn it.

If this is the wrong family I promise to cry.... loudly.

Hi Anne, that is amazing =D> how on earth did you find that! It certainly looks like her. She did have sisters named Margaret and Elizabeth, which would fit the naming patterns, and another named Ria ( don't know how to spell it but it is pronounced Rye Ah. I am doing this for a friend and there is not much to go on. My lot have all turned into Irish brickwalls and I am so tired of banging my head on them.
Now I can give SP some more of my money (well what else am I going to do with it) and check this all out. Thank you so much!

I will have a look at the Carrigans you found, I am sure they are in the 1901 but probably the name is messed up. You have given me a lot to look at now and I am very grateful, please don't cry cos then I would be crying too [computer]

Hi Cathie

My pleasure. Just was convinced she had to have been born somewhere and sometime so searched against her mother's maiden name.

I promise not to cry about it if it turns out not to be your family. I would think Ria might have been Maria. That was my grandmother's name and she pronounced it Maryea rather than Mareea.

Hope it all proves to be the right people.
