St Luke's Glasgow
Hi, sorry if this information is already somewhere on the forum but, I am trying to solve the mystery of my mum's name being different than the name on her birth certificate and, it dawned on me that it may very well be her baptismal name she used. Mum lived in Glasgow, in Govan and I know that my granny was married in St Luke's. I have seen the link to the RC Churches but.........I don't know what part of Lanarkshire Glasgow is in!! so I don't know where to look. Can anyone help? please.
Love
Nica

Hi Nica
Govan is an area of Glasgow, Glasgow is in Lanarkshire (there is also a Parish called Glasgow, just to confuse things)
See;
http://www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-lanark.htm
and
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl
and put Glasgow in the search box.
Bear in mind that sometimes people are known within a family by a name which bears no relation to their given name. I know of three sisters, none of whom were known in the family by the names actually shown on their birth entries!
Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Nica, nica wrote:Thanks, Lesley will try that. It was in 1910, which might mean it no longer exists. I am homing in on St Luke's simply because grandmother was married there.
I'm curious as to how you know that your gran was married at St Luke's. If you have looked at her marriage entry then that should tell you which area of Glasgow she was married.
Was your mum born in Govan?
Regards,
Annette

Hi Nica
St.Lukes Church is in Ballater Street, Glasgow. It used to be known as Govan Street. The border between the Gorbals district and the Hutchesontown district was very close to Govan Street and St Lukes was in the Parish of Hutchesontown. The Church is now called St.John Duns Scotus.
I went to St. Lukes school in the 50's. It was attached to the Church.

Sorry, I should have said that St Lukes has been demolished (along with the school) and John Duns Scotus built on the site.
See a photograph at www.glasgowguide.co.uk/gorbals/church1.html
Also, if you look on www.mitchelllibrary.org choose virtual mitchell and look in the streets under Ballater St and you'll see a photo of the school, the Church was part of the building on the ground floor.

Re: St Luke's Glasgow
I know this is an old post, but my Great Grandfather was also married in St Luke's in 1917, before he came to Australia.
