TalkingScot is not just a discussion group

There are a number of other sections including The Gallery, Experts, Societies, Sources, Libraries, Censuse, and, last but not least, Registrars -see

The full title of the section is "Registration Districts in Scotland"

Relatively few researchers in the Scottish records realise that registration districts from 1855 to the present date have not remained the same.

There have been a number of major reorganisations by GROS of the RDs, particularly in the major urban areas, not least Glasgow.

It's not uncommon to come across researcher who "loses" their family, - they have a series of records in the one RD, - but then they "disappear", - this can involve a moonlight flight that crosses RD boundaries, but can also be the result of a reorganisation of the whole RD system!

Outside urban areas there were regular reorganisations of RDs involving amalagations as the population moved into the cities and urban areas.

This also involved the separate rationalisation of county boundaries, - these have been quite fluid over the decades, and, together with the amalgation of small rural RDs, this has often led to a parish "moving" from one county to another.

Al these factors mean that the situation is far from simple.

General Register Office Scotland has invested considerable resources in ensuring that searches on , statutory BMD and census records, take into account such county and RD boundary changes such that search results will produce the required "hits" regardless of such RD changes, but it needs to be appreciated that there are still a few situations which have not yet been fully resolved.

Let's please appreciate that for GROS in Edinburgh today it's not always just that easy or straightforward up to 150 years later to tease out and fully define every last amalgamation of RDs and reorganisation as it affected BMD and census records.

The Registrars section on TalkingScot -see provides a wealth of information on Registration District changes.
