Stillbirth.....
My Aunt had a stillbirth in 1955 and at the time did not know what was happening she thinks the baby is buried in Cardonald cemetery. Where would she be able to find out ? What information would she get if any? She has asked me to look on her behalf.

There is a register of stillbirths from 1939, normally closed, - your aunt might be entitled to access the record, - but I don't know if the register entry includes the place of burial. The open death registers of the era don't show that info.
The other option is hospital records, as these I'd think should show the place of burial. Again, for such a recent record (less than 75 years), normally closed, but it should be possible for you, on behalf of your aunt, to enquire.
For contact with both GROS and the hospital authorities involved it will probably be necessary for you to get a "To Whom It May Concern" letter from your aunt giving you the authority on her behalf to make the necessary enquiries.

Hi,
Thought I would let you know I phoned St Convals cemetery this morning and the lady I spoke to there was very helpful. I phoned her a couple of months ago about a lair my Grandmother had bought in 1949 and she was able to tell me who was in it and I remember her telling me that the Southern General used that cemetery for babies so thought I would give it a try and my aunt's baby is there in a communal grave. Hope this might help someone else who is looking.

Hi,
Just to confirm how I got the information. I didn't phone the hospital or the council. I just phoned St Convals cemetery gave the surname and date of birth and she looked it up right away. I don't know if other cemeteries are willing to do this but it might be worth a try to just phone and ask. I also sent a contact form to GROS and received an e-mail back from them today this is the reply. Hope this helps.
If your Aunt wished a copy of the Still Birth entry, she would have to write into this office, enclosing a cheque for £8.00 made payable to the 'Registrar General'.
She would have to supply details of the child's parentage as well as the date and place the still birth occurred. If she would like a name annotated against the entry, this is now possible and she should advise us of this when she writes in.
In order to find out where the still born baby was buried, she should either contact the health board responsible for the hospital where the still birth took place, who may be able to advise her of the procedure at that time. Another option would be to contact the council department responsible for local burial ground.

Hi,
I went to st Convals this morning with my Aunt and she saw where her baby is buried after 50years. They have built a wall there for the babies buried there and you can put up a plaque with the baby's name and a few words on it. There is a cost for this as far as I know about £150 you need to get a form to fill in from St Convals for this. My Aunt is so happy to have found her daughter after all this time and I am so glad I made that phone call.

Helen what a wonderful resolution to a long time sadness & I think it is lovely that you can retrospectively name your baby.I think most parents name their child well before birth even if it just Sprog.
