I have a 1875 birth in Renfrew, which had writing I could not read. SP sent me a copy where I can read it, but do not understand it.
It reads:
Maccinated as per Certificate dated 15th November 2875 S.M. Assist. Reg. Then has a large x across it. This is just under the childs name. Then to the left beyond the birth number is I believe: Clerical error Wlone MADLS. Last two words are the best I can make it out.
Can anyone explain this to me.
Thanks, Marva

This has nothing whatsoever to do with the registration of the birth!!
The first word is actually "Vaccination" - against smallpox, - the job of recording this compulsory vaccination was given to the registrars of BMD, and some of them, for a few years, recorded the fact that proof of vaccination had been presented on the birth register entry, instead of in the separate special register that should have been kept (the location of, which, if extant, is not known), - hence the "X" scoring out this wrong addition.
"Wlone MADLS" may be the name and initials of the peripatic superintending registrar who put this registrar right
Simple when you know how

Thanks so much. Now I too have learned something. If I had known I wouldn't have had SP send me a copy so I could read all about a "Vaccination". What a blow, I thought I had found something new.
