I recently picked up this book in my local library:
A Blast from The Past by Andrew Paterson
It is an account of the life of Andra McAnulty by his grandson.
Andra was [ I now know] instrumental in many aspects of the mining industry and trade unions .
There is an account of the Blantyre Disaster 22 October 1877, when 216 miners lost their lives in an explosion.
Andra McAnulty's father was one of the victims and he himself only escaped because he was seriously injured in an explosion 2 months previously.
Although it deals primarily with the McAnulty family, there is a vast amount of information about the mining community and the conditions they lived in, as well as details of old Blantyre.
Well worth a read if you can get your hands on a copy .
it was published by the author Andrew McAnulty Paterson and is ISBN 0-9550000-0-9 [/b]

That's sounds a really interesting read & with a fair few mining folk in my family down the pit at the time sounds like something I will try to get a hold of to read.
