Scottish songs & nursery songs.

Post by joette » Wed Jan 21, 2009 4:00 pm

Whilst web-caming with my nephew in Spokane I was listening to his son sing a nursery rhyme.
I remarked to James that he should be teaching his son some good old fashioned Scots songs like "The Jelly Piece Song"(my heyday)& "Ally-Bally"
He answered that he didn't know many.
I thought it would be nice to send them a book/CD with some Scottish tunes but not your usual "Flower of Scotland" type.
I did think of the "Singing Kettle" are they still around?
Any suggestions?

I think I've answered my own question- the Singing Kettle have the very dab with such tunes as "Aiken Drum"Ally Bally etc.

The Singing Kettle are alive and well but they aren't doing as many of the traditional songs as they used to.

I had some old videos that were brilliant, but the newer DVDs are fun but lack that certain something!

The schools in Scotland [well hereaboots any way] are keeping the language and songs alive - on Friday I'll be treated to 3 Craws, Jeely Piece, Red Yoy-yo along with half a dozen Scots poems and To a Moose!

It is highly amusing to hear the Song of the Clyde being sung by kids of Forth Valley though.......

Hi Joette,

Funny you should mention the Singing Kettle, I just came across my daughters old videos last week. I have just gone through all her old videos to give to friends that are returning to the UK this year. I kept the 'Singing Kettles' because I didn't think their kids would understand them  , they're English

My daughter was a HUGE fan when she was little and I think we have every 'Singing Kettle' video ever made. We also have tapes, bedding, curtains and various other sundry items. We used to go up to Glasgow every Christmas to see their shows.

Unfortunately they were never any use to my son as they are all 'Brit' videos and we've been in the US since he's been around.

So, if I can give them a new home, you're welcome to them.

On the subject of 'The Jeely piece song' and 'Red YoYo', it's Matt McGinn your looking for. I found a cd of all his songs on Amazon last year for the princely sum of $2.29. It cost more for the postage, and it's great! My favourite was always 'The Dundee Ghost'.

I think I need to go and have a wee listen now I'm in the mood. I could introduce him to my American friends at my 'Burns Supper' on Saturday night, couldn't I!.

Alan,

You're a star. Dundee Ghost was one of my Dad's party pieces.
