Marilyn,
I can see where he would need some help with that one! Do you have the whole page or just that piece? Sometimes it helps to be able to compare letters and words in the other entries.
It looks to me like on October 5th Mary Stevenson lawfully procreate....to John Stevenson in Mid...gate and Anna Mc....his spouse.
Best I can do!
Carol

Re: Mary Stevenson
Hi Marilyn
My best guess would be "October 5th was Mary stevenson lawfully procreat betwixt John Stevenson in Midlefredgate (nearest guess !) and Anna McLatchie his spouse."
Without knowing the district the name is just a wild guess.
Awful writing isn't it ?

Re: Mary Stevenson
I can see:
October 5th was Mary Stevenson Lawfuly procreat betwixt John Stevenson of Mid... Gate [Midle Red gate?]and Anna McLatchie his spouse
I can't see any other letter on the page like the R or K third from the end of the top line.
The IGI throws up this:
MARY STEVENSON Female
Christening: 05 OCT 1758 Sorn, Ayr, Scotland
Father: JOHN STEVENSON
Mother: ANNA MCCLATCHIE
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record.
It's too late here to start looking at Ayrshire maps for the mysterious place mentioned, but perhaps while I'm sleeping

I'm seeing:
October 5th was [baptised] (which is clearly indicated as having been inserted and in the row above, but in this image it has been cropped out, though the very bottom of the letters are visible) Mary Stevenson lawfully procreat betwixt John Stevenson in Midlefie[l]d (?)gate and Anna Mc____ his spouse.

Re: Mary Stevenson
Thanks Marilyn! I love those old OPR's even when I can hardly read them.
I think Wilma has it best. I'd agree on Midle Redgate for the location. If you look in the third line from the bottom of the whole page, the registrar uses Midle in another entry. The "betwixted" threw me though!

Re: Mary Stevenson
I'm going to stick my neck out here (I'm ducking, though
)
I Googled Redgate Sorn Ayrshire and got to a map showing "Redgate Sorn, Mauchline, Ayrshire KA5 6HL, UK".
There appears to be a Redgate Farm between Mauchline and Sorn!
Could the "Midle or Middle" actually be a very badly written/spelled Mauchline? Well! The rest of the writing is dreadful enough - isn't it?
Added later: This link, http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?sourceid= ... CAwQ8gEwAA then zoom out till you see Mauchline and Sorn each side and slightly lower than the farm

Re: Mary Stevenson
Thanks to everyone attempting to decipher this spelling for me. Between Marilyn and Andrew P. they came up with this;
October 5th was baptized Mary Stevenson lawfully
procreat betwixt John Stevenson in Mid _______
-gate and Anna McClatchie his spouse.
The only word left was between "Mid and gate", now the more I look at this mess of writing I tend to agree with “Midle Red-gate”.
Thanks Marilyn for posting this for me.

Re: Mary Stevenson
I'm slightly more awake this morning [listening to see which of my kids' schools are closed by the snow -all of them, it's really bad here]
I've been looking at old maps on the NLS site a 1775 one shows Redgate between Mauchlin and Sorn
http://www.nls.uk/maps/joins/797.html
look at the middle right section of the map
and 2 squares in and down from the top left corner will reveal Mauchiln [or Machline] and Redgate just outside it.
