I'm hoping someone can clarify for me what 'relict of' means. I have an ancestor, Jane Garrett who died in 1883. On her death record her parents' names are given as David Garrett and Jane Cunningham, both deceased. On the 1881 Census Jane Garrett gave her place of birth as Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire. While searching the internet I came across this transcription:
Cunningham / Garrett, Janet - D15/11/1846 - at Drumore Village, on the 15th inst., Janet Cunningham, relict of David Garrett, advanced in years. (inserted November 19 and 26, 1846)
Does 'relict of' mean 'widow of'? I believe Drumore is in Wigtownshire, so the place could be right for Janet's parents. I haven't really looked at OPR Deaths before so I'm not familiar with the terminology.
Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Donna.

Re: OPR Death Record
Thanks Lesley. I was hoping it meant 'widow' rather than 'daughter' or something else. It looks quite likely this is Jane Garrett's mother after all.
Best wishes,
Donna.

Re: OPR Death Record
While most often encountered in records where it means the widow of the person named, it will also be found meaning the widower, i.e. the meaning is the surviving partner of the marriage.
