Hi Ailsa

Not just a Glasgow word. I used it across in East Lothian. We would dreep out of a tree. But in Glasgow it was great for describing climbing over high back court walls and dropping down the other side.

I'm no words smith, but I believe that it is quite possible that 150 years ago, in Larnarkshire, the above name in either the English or Gaelic vernacular of the day, did not have the connotation of today. From time to time I see commentary on the adoption of slang, and am amazed to learn that it has been adopted within my time, and not in a previous generation. Such is the speed of international communication today. Cheers - Alan SHARP.

Hi all at TS,

A quick update on my ongoing search for James Beveridge (I did leave it for at least a week :) ).
I found a death cert for his child Janet born 04/10/1867 - She died on 22/11/1880 at 48 Rumford St Bridgeton Glasgow. She was 13 years old and died of disease of the spine :?: . James is still alive and still a steamship stoker. Catherine is also still alive. However the witness was Ellen D I C K (sister).
So he has died between 22nd November 1880 and when the 1881 census was taken. My question is what would you do next? I need some helpful suggestions please. It seems a shame that i am so close to finding him. I am not asking for anyone to look for him for free just for some advice.

Thanks,
Ailsa

Hello Ailsa,

You’re going great guns, and you’ve just about got him cornered. Were there any possible later marriages etc that would reinforce the census info?

It looks like they’ve been at 48 Rumford Street for a few years, was the family still living there on census night 1881?

I had another look but still no luck. I found an interesting example of how someone can disappear off the radar in the Dundee Courier, June 24, 1881.
FINDING OF A BODY.—Wednesday morning a St. Andrews boat proceeding to the fishing grounds discovered the body of a man floating a few miles east from the Bell Rock. It had the appearance of having been a considerable time in the water, and was much decomposed. The fishermen attached a stone to the body and sank it.

Probably not the sort of thing you’d want to take on a fishing trip but I wonder if that was a correct procedure.

All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan,

Thanks for replying to my post.
The only child i can't find to look for a marriage is the son James born 6/11/1858. His last whereabouts are on the 1871 census age 12 at 48 Rumford St.Bridgeton. After that i cannot trace him.
They are still at 48 Rumford St on the 1881 census - Catherine Head widowed 57 - Catherine daughter 16 PL weaver and Lizzie daughter 19 PL weaver.
Looking back at his brother Thomas who drowned at sea - I have a census return of 1881 for Thomas on board the SS Dione in Penarth. This was 2 years before the ship he was on - the St Columba foundered losing all hands in the Bay of Biscay.
This would be around the same time as James has gone missing - but would they have travelled around together in these days or am i clutching at straws?
Gruesome story about the fishing boat but i suppose in these days there would be no forensics to try and identify the body.

Regards
Ailsa

The Dione was doomed as well. She sank in 1884 after a collision in the Thames near Gravesend. Ten of the crew and seven passengers were drowned. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bi ... --1----0--

Thanks for the replies. Sarah - I have looked at that James Beveridge but can't really get any more info on him.
