Looks like all James Beveridges are slippery!

Re: James Beveridge in Yorkshire in 1881. There is a marriage for a James Beveridge in Scarborough, Yorkshire in the 2nd quarter of 1882. On the same page is a marriage for Mary Jane Baxter, same place and quarter.

In 1891, Mary Jane is here on the census:

You'll notice, of course, that James Beveridge is no where to be seen! I wasn't able to find him on the 1891 census, but maybe someone else can!

I think you've nailed him
Mary J says she is a widow in 1891 and sure enough there is a death for a James Beveridge in Scarborough in 1888. The transcription of the index says he was 80 years old, but if you look at the image, it says 30. So... is he Ailsa's James? English death records being what they are, there is no way of knowing from the death cert. But the marriage record should give his father's name and occupation.

Hi Sarah,

Well, that explains why I couldn't find him on the 1891 census! Ran out of time before I could check the image and didn't think to check the BMD's for his death until after I disconnected.

At least we found out something about this James Beveridge for Ailsa even if it does mean dealing with the English records!

On the 1901 census, Mary J and the girls including another daughter Alice are still with her parents and a little further down the page is a John Baxter and wife and daughter who might be Mary J's brother.

Hi Carol and Sarah,
He is looking quite a good candidate although why he would be in Scarborough is any one's guess. The 2nd daughter is Kattie which may be after his mother Catherine.
I did trawl the pilot search of the LDS but could not find him there married to Mary J Baxter. It's the best lead i have had yet !
