I'm thrilled at the help you have all given me. I was just hoping for a reply on places but you have been so generous and such a help. Elizabeth Davidson is my relative and she died in 1852. I have the OPR banns & marriage search for John's marriage to Jane Stewart (although I notice that the census calls her Jean) in 1854.
I didn't see the Arbroath John so will search for that reference tomorrow. Arbroath is where they lived. It is John and Elizabeth's son Robert that is the one who came to Australia between the time of the 51 census and 1855 when he signed a petition. He is my grandfather's grandfather.
