Here are the children shown for William and Jane(t) at Glasgow

Results for: Father: William Mcintosh, Mother: Janet Thomson

1. AGNES FRANCES MCINTOSH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 1821 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. SARAH THOMSON MCINTOSH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 1820 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
3. ALEXANDER THOMSON MCINTOSH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 1826 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
4. MONA MARGARET MCINTOSH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 1823 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

While trying to decide if I am looking at one or two families - I looked for these and could only find submitted records on the IGI. I checked on SP and can find no baptisms for any of the children - with either named mother - Thomson or McMillan - I've tried quite a few wildcard options without success

There is a marriage (well banns with no marriage date added) on both the IGI and SP for William McIntosh and Janet Thompson - 1 Jan 1820 Gorbals.

There is a burial for Agnes at Kiama Cemetery
http://austcemindex.com/inscription.php?id=7040080 (inscription is not very legible - but parents are William and Janet on the death index)
but I can't find anything for William and Janet in the cemeteries db

From SMH 15 Apr 1843
On the 14th Instant, after a few days illness, Andrew Thompson, aged fifteen months, youngest son of William McIntosh engineer, Sussex street Sydney

24 Feb 1855
By special license on the 22nd instant by the Rev John Dougall, Mr William Middleton, Engineer of Sydney, to Miss Janet McIntosh, third daughter of Mr William McIntosh, Engineer of Union-street Sydney

There are many more family notices
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/search?adv=y

I am becoming happier that the Ancestry entries have simply clued to the name Macmillan because there is a baptism with the right names and the right time on the IGI.

There are the following extracted records on the IGI

JANET MACMILLAN Christening 29 NOV 1799 Middle Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland Father HUGH MACMILLAN Mother: AGNES STEWART
Of interest is that these parents had another Janet baptised in 1803, which may indicate the death of Janet from 1799 in infancy

JANET THOMSON Birth 07 SEP 1799 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland Father HUGH THOMSON Mother AGNES DAVIDSON

And the only extracted marriage/banns
JANET THOMSON Spouse WILLIAM MCINTOSH Marriage 01 JAN 1820 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland

The name Thomson seems much more likely. (Especially given the 2nd names of two of the children). Do you have a death certificate/transcript for Janet McIntosh d Kiama 1862? I've sent a note to the Ancestry tree owners for clarification as to where/how they found the parents of Janet.

Hi Natae and Trish,

Your exchange about Janet McIntosh nee Thompson is fascinating and very timely.

I am researching my family tree and it appears that we have Agnes Francis McIntosh as the common link. She is my GG Grandmother.

As you state, Agnes married James Robb and they had 13 (yes 13!) children; two of their children had Thomson as a second name: Sarah Thomson (b1845 sixth child) and Hugh Thomson (b 1847 one of twins at seventh and eight children) (note no "P"). "Sarah Thomson" is the same name as one of Agnes' sisters.

I will be spending time at the Kiama Family History Centre in the coming few months with one of my cousins, while we explore our family tree and the wealth of information they have.

If you like I can look into Janet's and the Thompson family details to assist you as well as satisfy our needs.

Let me know if you want me to do that and what information you would like me to chase.

If you have any information on Janet's family beyond her parents and offspring that would be much appreciated as that part of my tree is a little bare.

Other parts I have back to GGGGG Grandfather and Grandmother - the Thompsons are at the GGGG level.

Regards

Rex

Hi Natae,

This McIntosh family is problematical...

There is a real risk of confusion as I have found at least 3, and possibly 4, different William and Janet McIntosh couples!!...and all about the same ages and living about the same time and with some common children's names.

So thanks for the information - I shall get back to you with anything that I find.

In the meantime here is some "stuff" I am working with at the moment:

The Janet Thompson I have married a William McIntosh in 1 Jan 1820.

They had at least 4 children

Sarah Thomson
Janet
Agnes Frances
Alexander Thomson

There is reference also to an unknown first son (Alexander is referred to as the Third son)

Mona Margaret - has me stumped

I have found another son: John McGarvie McIntosh (b 1835 d 1855). He was christened at St Andrews Church in Sydney on 22 Nov 1835. He was born in October 1835 and he died on the family farm in Kiama after a long illness.

There are possibly two other children James b 1840 and Andrew Thompson b 1842 d 1843 - need more checking, but they were also christened at St Andrews, but I am not sure to which McIntosh family these two belong.

More Sherlocking to be done.

All the best

Rex

Presumably John was named after the man who probably baptised him - Rev John McGarvie - who came to Australia (1826) when he could not get a calling in Scotland. Despite he was introduced to the country by Dunmore Lang the two fell out and reading of their relationship defines much of the early Presbyterian Church in Australia.

Good luck with all the Sherlocking

Hi Natae,

I have just returned from the Kiama Family History Centre. Some mixed information for you:

William McIntosh:
1. found William's death certificate: died at his daughter's property, in Kiama on 10 May 1867, aged
2. buried at Jamberoo Cemetery, Prebyterian Section;
3. death reported by son-in-law James Noble
4. could not find anymore detail on him - no details of parents or children on certificate

Janet Thomson McIntosh - found drowned 19 June 1862 aged 62 years - no other details

What I have been able to find out is that there were two McIntosh families in Sydney about the same time both with parents called William and Janet and both with children similarly named!!

The ones associated with the Agnes Francis who married James Robb are (as per Trish's list):

William McIntosh b 1789, d 1867
Janet McIntosh (nee Thomson or Thompson) b 1799 d 1862
Sarah Thomson
Agnes Francis
Alexander Thomson
Janet Thomson
Thomas

And in answer to Trish's question, yes, there were three other children born in Australia as best we can determine:

John McGarvie b 1835
James b 1840
Andrew Thomson b 1842 d 1843

Trish - I would love to recieve the details you mentioned in Dec last - have sent a PM

We could not find anything on Janet McIntosh in Kiama, no matter what combination on names and spellings we tried.

Sorry I cannot be of any more assistance at this stage - will keep looking though.

regards

Rex
