Help find James Moffat

Post by fortyseven » Mon Jan 31, 2011 3:30 pm

Hello everyone,

This is my post on TalkingScot.

Can anyone help with my search for a James Moffat b. abt. 1798- Annan. His parents were William Moffat & Christian Moffat (nee Fraser). All I have is his death entry. He died in lodgings in Annan 10 May 1857- he was a widower (no name) his son John was present. He is buried in the old cemetery, Annan. Was unable to get information from Annan regarding his burial as, there records do not go back to 1857.

William and Christian Moffat are my GGG Grandparents and can't find there death entry anywhere in Scotland. That's probably another post.

I would like to find who his wife was and son John.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

His parents would seem to be this couple here

http://genealogy.clanmoffat.org/getpers ... ClanMoffat

The link to Source 1037 at the bottom of that page has contact information to the person who submitted that information.

I would be very interested in anything you can add to this couple or their descendants to add to this database that I maintain for the Clan Moffat Society.

Cheers

I have that information and the James mentioned in the Moffat Clan is, William's father.

It's James Moffat born 1798, son of William & Christian Moffat I am looking for. If I have any further info I'll pass it on to you.

Hi fortyseven and welcome to TalkingScot!

Does the death cert for James Moffat give his occupation? There are a couple of James Moffats on the 1851 census on Ancestry in Annan, both with sons named John though one would only have been about 11 years old when James died. A little young to be an informant, but possible I guess.

If William and Christian Moffat died before the required registration of deaths began in 1855, your chances of find a record of their deaths is cut significantly. I have a bunch of those myself!

If you have any other information on James' family, please post it. Some of us will do some digging around for you!

Hi Carol,

It appears James was a shoemaker. Sadly I have no more information on James other than his date of birth, parents, he was a widower when he died, but no name and had a son John.

It certainly appears that way as, they died before the required registration of deaths began in 1855. Didn't realise the chances of finding a record of their deaths is cut significantly, though.

James had two brothers that I know of. Haven't found any sisters.

Andrew b. abt.1797 Wysbie Hill, Kirkpatrick Fleming. He married a Mary Ann Knox 1818. Mary died 23 Oct. 1869 in Fauldingcleugh, Kirkpatrick Fleming.

Joseph Moffat b. 1802 Dumfries died 1871 Penninghame, Newton Stewart. Joseph was my GG Grandfather

Don't know if this will help with the search. Willaim & Christian's perents were:

James Moffat b. 1721 Ecclefechan and Catherine Dalgleish b. 1733. They were married abt. 1759 - Ecclefechan

I appreciate all the help I can get with my family search.

Margaret

Hello Margaret,

There are no pre 1855 death OPR’s for Annan Parish in Dumfries.

Hello Alan,

Thank you for your response. Now I know there are no pre 1855 death OPR’s for Annan Parish in Dumfries.

I found the information from Scotlands People, very interesting. The only way to perhaps find William & Christian, is look for family headstones and see if they were buried with them. Having said that, there aren't many headstones for Moffats.

Thanks once again,

Margaret

I may have found my James Moffat's marriage - 22 February 1822, Annan - James Moffat, shoemaker to Janet Irving of Landhead Toll Bar.

Still haven't found them on the 1841/1851 Annan census.

Also trying to find Janet's death entry and their son John's birth or marriage. Can anyone please help me with these. Would also like to know where in Annan, Landhead Toll Bar was, in 1822.

Kind regards

Hi fortyseven,

Landheads shows up on the old and the modern maps:

http://maps.nls.uk/os/view/?sid=74488573
Go to the bottom edge of this map, close to the right-hand side. Follow the bottom edge along until you see 3° 15' (west of the Greenwich meridian). Landheads is just above the 3° 15' marker. It is also marked as TP (turnpike).

There are some children born to a James Moffat and Janet Irving in Wigtown - extracted on the IGI - apologies if you have already discounted them
JOHN IRVING MOFFAT Christening: 13 OCT 1831 Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland
JOHN IRVING MOFFAT Christening: 12 JUN 1833 Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland
JANET MOFFAT Christening: 23 JUN 1834 Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland

I don't easily see any of them on the census records
