Re: Help find James Moffat
Hello Trish,
Thank you kindly for finding the births for James Moffat & Janet Irving in Penninghame. I hadn't come accross them.
My G.G Grandfather, Joseph Moffat (James's brother) who was born in Annan and married a Catherine Johnstone, moved to Penninghame. So, I checked my information to see if Joseph & Catherine had a son John. They didn't so, this James & Janet with children John & Janet born in Penninghame could be the ones I am looking for.
Would explain why I have been unable to find them in Annan for 1841/1851.Now I need to find Janet Moffat's death and perhaps John's marriage and death.
James Moffat obviously came back to Annan and died there in 1857- in lodgings.
Thank you once again.

Re: Help find James Moffat
Hi fortyseven
Nice to hear they are 'possibles" - given that you had previously found a connection to Penninghame. It seems there was some serious hiding, or bad transcriptions in the census records. The first John presumably died - perhaps there may be burials available for Penninghame?
wishing you success for finding the related deaths/marriages.

Re: Help find James Moffat
Hello kenspeckle,
Many thanks for the information.
My Joseph was a master plumber & gas fitter in Newton Stewart.
The James Moffat and Catherine Dalgleish were my GGGG Grandparents and William Moffat born 1772 was my GGG Grandfather. I now know his brothers and sisters names.
The only children I know of, that William Moffat and Christian Fraser had were: Andrew b. 1797 James b. 1798 and Joseph b. 1802
Regards

Hi Trish,
Yes, I thought perhaps the first John had died. I will have a look for his burial.

The London Family History Centre other LDS may have those films or be able to order in for you if you live near one be worth a look at to see if a gravestone for him reveals any more of family

Re: Help find James Moffat
I reckon the Andrew b 1797 died as a babe and the later one born in 1818 was renamed as possibly one of the parents most likely Christian had a father named Andrew going by Scottish naming patterns
a quick look at Scottish church records show a
Christian Fraser christening 17 Aug 1777 Dumfries,Dumfries father Andrew
other possible children
James Fraser 3 Nov 1771 Dumfries,Dumfries father Andrew
Mary Fraser 4 Apr 1773 Dumfries,Dumfries father Andrew
John Fraser 19 Nov 1775 Dumfries,Dumfries father Andrew
??? Andrew Fraser 31 Jan 1779 Dumfries,Dumfries father Andrew
an Andrew Fraser married a Jannet Gibson 14 Oct 1770 Dumfries,Dumfries
also worth looking at Gretna marriages my Dumfries folk were notorious border hoppers

Re: Help find James Moffat
Hello Lesley,
I don't have any of the information you have found but, I will look into them.
The MOFFAT WILLIAM 15/01/1851 BLACKSMITH AT ANNAN DUMFRIES SHERIFF COURT SC15/41/9 3 Pages may be interesting and help establish wether it's my GGG Grandfather as, I don't have his death details or his wife Christian Moffat (nee Fraser)
May thanks.
Kind regards,
fortyseven
