Marriage 1853 - in OPR - but no date of marriage given

Post by steiner » Sun May 08, 2011 10:51 am

I found the marriage entry in the OPR's for my grat grat grandfather and his wife. On reading the entry, the marriage refers to two proclamation dates which I expect are reading of the Banns. There is however, no date of marriage given! They had three children sunsequently before she died in 1864 and he re-married.

In entries for other couples either side of the marriage there are prclamation dates given etc - and the statement "married on ..." giving date.

I wonder why there is no marriage date given on my family's entry? Any thoughts please.

Hi Andy,

It is quite common for there to be no mention of the marriage in the OPR proclamation of banns register. It doesn't mean that they were not subsequently married. Nor does it prove that the marriage did go ahead. From our point of view it is nice and tidy if the marriage is mentioned there, and hopefully (but not necessarily) a date for the mariage.

All the best,

Were the couple both living in the same parish? If they weren't it would be worth looking at the record for the other parish, if it exits, to see if it gives a date of marriage. Banns had to be called in both the bride's and groom's parishes.

Good point Eric. They lived in the same Parish so nothing further to look at.

Hi Andy

Have a look at the other entries on the same page. If they all have a date for the actual marriage as well as the date of the proclamation but your couple of interest lacks the date of the marriage then it's quite possible that the proclamation wasn't followed by the marriage.

However, as noted earlier in this thread, it's quite common for the date of marriage not to be recorded, so that, if all the entries on the same page (or plus/minus a page or two if you want to be near certain about the practice in the parish at this time) lack the date of the marriage, then you just have to assume the marriage followed, as was most often the case.

Hi MB - thank for your reply.

The majority of other entries on the page all have a date of marriage that may be suspicious in the first place. Strange how the minister filled those in and not the others that have not. And the dates are all in the same month and a few days apart at the most. Certainly got me wondering!
