What does "Cotton of...." refer to?

What does "Cotton of...." refer to?

I have an OPR from Kirkden 1767 which contains references to the father's name then "in Cotton of ....."
Mine reads "James Ogilvie in Cotton of Midleton had a child baptized upon the ....day of January 1767 named James"
All but one of the fathers have a 'Cotton of...." reference to them. None of the mothers are mentioned in
the records. Can anyone tell me what the Cotton reference means?

If it is to do with a place of abode my understanding would be that it refers to Cotton of <placename>, "cotton" being an abbrevited form of "Cottars Town".

In Kirkden the mother’s name seldom rated a mention before 1809.

Middleton something appears to be up this side road but Google has partly blotted out the sign because it thinks it is a car number plate. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=56 ... 4,,1,12.08

Thanks everyone - how lovely does that area look? Don't know if it is my James Ogilvie but
if so, he sure lived in a lovely place (bet it was a bit tough back in the day though).

Hi Wendy,
You've probably found a lot of Angus placenames are 'Cotton of...' 'Kirkton of ...' 'Milton of ...' and so forth - it describes the social organisation of people living in small hamlets. Cotton was where several cottars lived, Milton had the mill, Kirkton the kirk. The other common name is 'Mains of ...' which was the home farm named for the area. Alas a lot of the names aren't on Googlemaps.

Fife too! And probably quite a few other areas of Scotland.
