Baby Girl Scott -did she exist?

Post by joette » Tue Jul 12, 2011 12:14 pm

On the 1855 Birth Certificate of Andrew Scott it lists the children previously born to his Mother-Helen nee Veitch. In it listed is one daughter(living)-Janet Liddel Scott & one deceased daughter & one deceased son.I have been able to trace the dead son-John Scott(1)-born 1843 & died in Milton Cottages 1849 but there is no trace of a birth or death of a Baby Girl Scott in the time frame 1842-1855.
John's name is on his parents headstone along with Janet's daughter-Helen Veitch Christie but again no baby girl Scott I Have called her this since finding her possible existence.
So now I have to ask -did John make a mistake when registering Andrew? That there was only 1 daughter-Janet Liddell Christie nee Scott? Perhaps Helen had a daughter before her marriage who died? They married in Eddlestone where Helen was born & they were both working before joining Helen's father & stepmother Janet Scott Nee Liddel in Glencorse Midlothian. Cannot find a suitable Scott or Veitch birth/death in that period.
So did she exist? Was it a slip on the part of an excited John Scott. If she existed why is her name not recorded on the gravestone?
Any hints suggestions gratefully recieved-they were married 1841 & Janet was born a scant three or four months later in Glencorse.John 1 was born 1843,William 1847 & John 2-1851,James 1853.It says her seventh child which would include a deceased girl-six without! Help.

Hi Joette:

Would it have been possible that the girl was born dead? In that case, being dead at birth, would it have been likely that neither the birth nor death would have been recorded? Further that the only record would have been the memory of the mother and father, especially since it was before required registration?

Sorry not to be any fountain of inspiration,
Frances

I think paddyscar is correct

Still births were not recorded at all until the late 1920's early 1930's leaving the parents with the only memory.

Greetings.

There has been quite a lot of discussion about stillbirths on this site. The reply from Andrew gives the info re registration -

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5002&hilit=stillbirth%E2%80%A6

Placing "stillbirth" in the site search box at the top of the page will lead to futher discussion.

Thanks Alan & Frances I still feel that this little girl lived even if there is no record of her.
Folk might think I'm mad but I "feel" her around me like she's asking to be remembered.
