Had a problem deciphering the names of Hannah Mathison's parents (middle entry) -thought I would seek help. Can anyone read them?

Thanks
Sandy

Hi Sandy
I think the father's name is John Matthewson and his occupation is Veterinary(?) Surgeon but I am struggling with the mother. It could be Helen?
Still squinting!

That's a hard one! but having the full page helps to rule out letters!

I 'think' her mother's MS is Harper, I thought Susan but 2nd glance looks like Lu....

Could the father be Ian ?

Probably way off :?

My possibility

John Matthewson, veterinary surgeon; Susan Matthewson MS Harper

(gosh no-one had posted when I started looking - slow interpreter here )

Without reading the posts first, I thought Susan Harper for the mother.

At first glance I thought father's occupation looked like "Maternity Surgeon"!! And "Veterinary" seems more likely :D I read his first name as James.

Fantastic response. Thank you all \:D/

I thought Harper for the mother's surname too.

I thought Simon for the father? Thought at first James but then I looked at the entry above and thought the father there was a James and the "J" was different.

Hannah gives her place of birth as Ashkirk on Census returns yet I can't find any baptism for her - NONE of my family seem to have been baptised until my 3 x g.grandfather marries in 1851:( Nor can I find a marriage for William Sandilands and Hannah Mathison.

Here is the birth of their daughter Mary.

MARY GRAY SANDILANDS

19 AUG 1827 Selkirk, Selkirk, Scotland

Parents:
Father: WILLIAM SANDILANDS
Mother: HANNAH MATTHEWSON

Later children are born at Peebles.

Could this be a relation or maybe just a coincidence?

ANN SCOTT MATHESON

10 JUL 1813 Ashkirk, Roxburgh, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JAMES MATHESON
Mother: MARY GRAY

Without reading any of the above answers, I see

Hannah Sandilands Married to William Sandilands Grocer.
1865 July Thirteenth 7h 30 min AM Old Town Beebles
F 63 years
Brian Matthewson, Veterinary Surgeon
Susan Matthewson M.S. Harper
Ovarian Tumour about two years ....
As Certified by John B. Gunn Surgeon
A M Sandilands, Son
1865 July 16th at Beebles
D... Cameron Registrar

Brian - not more than a guess after ruling out Ian, but could be Iain ?

Hi Annette

Yes, Mary Gray Sandilands IS William and Hannah's daughter.

William Sandilands was the brother of my 4 x grt grandfather Andrew Sandilands. William Sandilands and Hannah Mathison had the following children:

Mary Gray b.1827 Selkirk
Helen b. 1830 Peebles
James b.1833 Peebles
Alexander Mathison b.1842 Peebles d.1868 Dalkeith.

Here's where it gets complicated.

Andrew and Willam had an aunt, Julian(a) Sandilands b.1767 who married Richard Robertson in 1798, Julian(a) of Selkirk Parish, Richard of Stow. I have never been able to find a baptism for Julian(a).

Julian(a) and Richard Robertson had a son (amongst many), John Robertson b.1801 in Selkirk and this son John married Isabella Mathison b.1807 in Ashkirk, the sister of Anne Scott Mathison and another dauther of James Mathison and Mary Gray above.

The sons and families of Julian(a) and Richard Robertson, emigrate to Australia and settle "Sandilands" there.

Julian(a) died in London in 1852.

Helen, the dau of my William Sandilands and Helen Mathison married a William Thorburn in London in 1852 and they emigrate to Australia some time before 1863.

Still with me? :)

Now, James Mathison who married Mary Gray was a Blacksmith. Did blacksmith double as Veterinary Surgeons in those days? If so, could Ann Scott Mathison be my Hannah? On and off I come to the conclusion that they are ONE and the same and then I look at that death certificate I linked to and see her mother recorded as "HARPER".

I know for a fact, that the mother of my 3 x grt. grandfather David Sandilands is recorded as Elizabeth Inglis on his death certificate in 1906. However, David's mother was a Margaret Johnstone. If his death certificate in incorrect it adds to the possiblity that Hannah's is also?

Hope I haven't bored anyone too much with all this. It's all part of my 30 year research mystery or perhaps misery LOL ](*,)

Thanks Frances :)

Iain - possible.

Personally, I would rule out Brian though because the entry beneath has the informant as "James Ker, Brother" and the "B" is a different shape entirely than the first letter of Hannah's father's name.

Thanks for taking a look at it - really appreciated :)
