Could anyone please tell if Dixons /Dicksons and Whitholm/Wheatholm [different spellings] were farms in Tundergarth in the early 1800's and where they were.

There is also a Hayhill I am checking, might have been an estate in Tundergarth.

Hi fortyseven,

Dixons appears on maps through the ages that can be seen on the NLS website, and on current OS maps.

1830's map from John Thomson's Atlas of Scotland
Tundergarth parish, coloured yellow, is approximately midway between the NW corner and the centre of the map. Dixons is at the westmost end of the parish.

Current OS map showing Dixons

Hayhill shows up on the 1830's map to the east of Dixons, but doesn't show up on the current map.

As for Whiteholm, I would suggest Wyhethole should be considered. It can be seen on Ainslie's map of 1820. It lies NE of 'Tandergarth'. It appears as Wyliehole on the Thomson map, and on the current OS map. I cannot prove this is the place you are seeking, but I have found no better offering so far.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi AndrewP,

Thank you for the information.

As you will see I am trying to find Joseph Jardine's parents. Joseph married Janet Kerr Hayhill, Rosebank in 1792.

There was a James Jardine who died Dixons in 1797 and was curious to see if Dixons was near Hayhill.

There was also a Thomas Jardine who died at at Wheatholm 1797. Both James and Thomas were the names of 2 of Joseph's sons.

The New Statistical Account, 1845, has the farm of Whiteholm as the property of Mr Swan, and the location of Druid remains known as the “Seven Brethren”. It looks like John Swan actually lived at Whitstonehill, see land owners previous page.

On a modern map there’s something called Whiteholm Rig near the Seven Brethren, and across the road there’s Whitstonehill and Wyliehole and Whiteknowe. Rig seems to be just a description of the topography i.e. a ridge. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=32 ... 82600&lm=0

Hi Alan,

Many thanks. Found The New Statistical Account, “Seven Brethren” most interesting.
