James SHAW & Jean McKI(E)NZIE - Inverness

Post by keltyk » Mon Jun 11, 2012 2:40 pm

Hi All,

I am new to the forum, and have joined in the hope that I can find some more detail on my 3 x Great Grandfather, James SHAW and his family.

James SHAW married a Jean (Jane) McKI(E)NZIE in Nov of 1779 in Inverness, and from family stories, they were connected in someway to a place named Muirton, which could have been in Black Isle.

I have very little information on this family except for that that I have extracted from the IGI.

The following are the children of James and Jean SHAW:-
Margrat - Chr. 30/09/1780
Alexander McKenzie - Chr. 27/10/1781
Marjory - Chr. 20/11/1782
Jean - Chr. 12/02/1784
Mary - Chr. 18/06/1785
Mitchel - Chr. 11/12/1786
Agnes - Chr. 17/01/1788
Marjory - Chr. 12/02/1789
Isoble - Chr. 24/08/1791
Sarrah - Chr. 13/11/1792
Barbra - Chr. 04/03/1794
William -
Hectorina - Chr. 18/01/1800

Nearly all these names carried down through the generations, so I am confident that this is my James and Jean (Jane). My problem however is that I cannot seem to find a record of the chr. of my 2x Great grandfather William who was their son from what we can gather. He went on to India and finally to South Africa where he married a Lucy Maria Parry, who was also ex India and of Scots decent and they had a whole herd of children, some born in India, some in Scotland and the rest in South Africa.

Anyone who is able to shed some light on this one or who has information they are willing to share on any of these lines of the SHAW family, I would be most appreciative, as researching from SA although over the years has become much easier, is still frustrating at times if you don't have large budgets for subscriptions etc.

Once again thanks for reading and looking forward to your responses.

Cheers for now
Karen

Hi Karen

Welcome to [talkingscot]

There is a baptism on the IGI for a William Shaw 23 Jun 1790 - father given as James - mother's name not given - is this a possible? Seems a few years older than where you have your William in the list. The image on SP (or via LDS family history film) may give some clues as to whether the same father as the other children.

Hi Trish,

Many thanks for the reply, and thank you for the tip, I have had a look at this entry, and it is very possible that it is my William, as I only slotted him in in the position he had, as there were no children born in those couple of years. Will see if I can find a reference to him here in SA and qualify this entry.

Thanks again. =D>

Karen
