1831 marriage record

Post by AndrewP » Tue Jan 04, 2005 7:26 pm

Most of the OPR marriage records make no mention of the parents. They are a record of the "calling of the banns". In most cases thay are made of one sentence only. Typically it might be something like: "John Smith and Anges Brown, both of this parish gave their names for marriage." This in itself is no proof that the marriage ever took place. A few then go on to say the marriage went ahead after the banns being proclaimed three times.

There are exceptions to this where the names of the parents are given, and sometimes the name of a house. But (sadly) these are a small minority.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Parents' names

Post by AndrewP » Tue Jan 04, 2005 7:44 pm

Hi Kaz,

Your best plan is to track down the death certificates of the couple that married in 1831. Assuming that they survived until at least 1855 and that they died in Scotland, their death certificates should provide their parents' names.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Kaz,

I'm presuming (never wise in family history...) that this is the marriage?

JOHN LAURIE
AGNES MACMILLAN
Marriage: 30 DEC 1831 High Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland

Do you know if John had any siblings?

Ta - Jack

If it's any help John and Agnes are not listed as deceased on the marriage cert of son John to Ellen/Helen Browning in 1863 but I can't see the parents in 1881 here's the son, John:

Since John and Agnes were married in 1831 it's a safe bet that he was born before 1810. A search for John L*rie death Renfrewshire between 1863 and 1881 yields only two possibilities (I'd go for the 71 year old who died in 1880 - same IGI reference district as the census).

There is only one possible Agnes L*rie death, again in 1880

Now go get them!

Hi Kaz,

Were the wrong parents a James & a Mary? It's just that the Paisley censuses have these entries, and Glen & Moncrieff streets are very near one another.
--------
1841 - Glen St.
John LAWRIE 30, silk hlw
Agnes 30
James 8
Mary 6
John 1
--
1851
John LAURIE 42
Agnes 40
Mary 16
John 11
Robert 6
Agnes 4
Jane 2
----------
1841 - 9 Moncrieff St.
James LAWRIE 53, cotton hlw
Mary 50
Jean 30
Mary 23
Agnes 17
James 15
William 13
Janet 10
Margaret 7
--------
I don't know where parents James & Mary were in 1851, but their first 6 children are all together as a family in 1851.
This looks like some of them in 1881.

1881 Census Place: Paisley Middle Church, Renfrew, Scotland
