Henry Watson

Post by Gordyw » Wed Feb 03, 2016 9:08 pm

Hi ,It's been a while since I've been here as I decided to take a break.I've had some successes lately though and have discovered and met many new family members. However theres one person that eludes me....he is my GGrandfather Henry Watson,I have him on the 1861 Census in Alloa,Clackmannanshire age 10 living with his father George 23 and his mother Sarah 23.So heres the problem...unless the parents had him when they were 13 years old he must be someone elses son or adopted.I checked OPR births and unsurprisingly nothing comes up with him with his parents.Should I then safely assume he belongs to another family member and has been taken in ,There are 16 possible hits in the OPR births around 1850.
Any insight appreciated.
Thanks Gordon. ](*,)

Hi Gordon,

When you find George and Sarah in the 1871 census, they have both aged by more than 10 years since their declared ages in 1861, bringing a more 'regular' age gap between parents and son. Henry is not with his parents in 1871.

The online IGI shows 7 children born to this couple between 1856 and 1870. But as you have already found, no sign of a record of Henry's birth around 1850/1851.

All the best,

AndrewP

Are his 'parents' the George Watson and Sarah Henney who married in Alloa in June 1857?

What ages do they have on that document?
and if so have you searched for the birth of a Henry Henney around the right period.

So it looks likely that he is Sarah's son but not George's. Here he is in 1851 at High St, Clackmannan -

Sarah Hainie 40 Head
Sarah Hainie 19
Agnes Hainie 15
Hugh Hainie 13
Robert Hainie 8
Henry Griffy 6 Mo born Alloa, Grandson

Annette

Hi Annette, thanks so much for your research ,I never even thought of looking in the Hainie direction or even the variation in spelling...perhaps I should take the blinkers off, lol. The name Griffy throws in yet another name in the genealogical pot.So Sarah 19 is my GGGrandmother who marries George in 1857.

My gut tells me his name is Henry Griffin. Maybe a look at the original census record would help.

You might be lucky and find something in the Kirk Session records regarding his father.
