Modern name for Poul in Perthshire?

Post by stepmars » Sat Aug 27, 2016 10:17 am

Hi,
Is someone able to tell me where Poul is in Perthshire? I've seen it a number of times in OPRs for Muckhart. I'm thinking it might be the village called Pool of Muckhart.

What range of dates are you talking about?
The old maps I've looked at all refer only to Pool of Muckhart, if they note anything there at all.

Oldest clear one is 1840's :

use the blue button on the left to slide to a modern map below.

Ah you're a bit before decent mapping then.

Have a look at Roy's map 1750's :
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=14 ... yers=3&b=1
scale is a bit out from reality, but the rivers and hills are good landmarks to guide you.

this one gives you the extent of the Parishes, Muckhart is the pink one middle right edge:

and white scrap middle left:
http://maps.nls.uk/view/74400796

a good modern map:

I'm not seeing anything obvious, at first glance.
That part is really almost Clackmannanshire.

Hi Stepmars,

The Muckhart Parish chapter of the Second Statistical Account for Scotland includes the following sentence:
  • Ecclesiastical state:- The church is situated to the north-east of the principal village called the Pool, very conveniently for the villagers, but not equally so for those residing in the west end of the parish.
This text dates from 1835. I found no reference to Pool or Poul in the First Statistical Account.

I am fairly confident that Poul that you are seeking is Pool that is in the text above, and is nowadays known as Pool of Muckhart.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks to both of you. I can't find Poul on any map either and I also conclude it is likely to be an archaic spelling of Pool.
