In Chapel Donan

Post by winslowsmom » Fri Oct 12, 2018 5:49 pm

Hello All

I have found OPR baptismal records on Scotlands People for my 7th great grandmother and several of her siblings. The father is listed as "lawful son to John Watson in chapel = donan". I notice that several other of the entries have this in chapel donan, sometimes with no = sign, where others have the occupation, or notation deceased.
OPRs are from Girvan, Ayr. Any ideas what this means ?

Thanks for any help

Hi Cathy,

It looks like Chapel Donan is a location in Girvan parish, north of the town.

It is the site of a chapel of that name; the chapel having been a ruin for some time.

In some old documentation, an equals-sign is used where we may use a hyphen nowadays.

ALl the best,
