Marriage 1796 .....

Post by elmca » Tue Mar 14, 2006 3:47 pm

I have a copy of a document which reads:
Young, Robert in the parish of Fala and Jean Murdoch in this gave their names for proclamation of Banns 14th May 1796. Caution James Henry in Stow for him & John Forsyth for her - They were married after due proclamation. Can anybody tell me a little more about this extract - were they actually married on the 14th May or some time after and also is there likely to be any other record on this couple with more details?

The 14th was the date when they applied to the minister for the banns to be proclaimed in relation to their intention to marry. This would then have happened on 3, or 2 successive Sundays, - there were services in the morning and evening.

If there was no obection following the proclamation, as was evidently the case here, they would have been married soon after. It's not always the case that the fact of the subsequent marriage is noted.

There's unlikely to be any other record.

BTW The two cautioners held a bond which was forfeited if the couple didn't marry.

And it's pronounced kayshun rather than the way in which we would normally pronounce caution as koshon.

I would just like to add to this posting that I have since found the death certificates for this couple (my gggg-gp) in the OPR.
Jean Murdoch died in May 1834 age 59 years & Robert Young died in June 1834 age 62 years. Only a few days apart - how sad.
I guess there must have been an outbreak of illness around this time for them both to die almost at the same time. They are buried in 'The Churchyard of Stow' but I'm not sure what churchyard that means. This couple had 2 sons that I know of - my ggg-gf James Young b.about 1806 and his brother William b.1805 both at Fala. There must have been more children but I have had no luck in finding them yet.

I would take that to be the Churchyard of the parish church in Stow, Midlothian (at that time - nowadays in the Scottish Borders).

All the best,

Hi Elaine, the old graveyard is right in the middle of Stow, (pronounced to rhyme with "cow") by the A7, with the old ruined church in the centre and even more ruined to one side, a bishop of St. Andrews´ rather small palace!
There is picture here of the ruin: http://www.heriot.info/church/histstow.html
I´m afraid I don´t know of a list of MIs there, but there is an unpublished list at the SGS in Edinburgh I believe.

Guid hunting,

Thrall

Thank you Thrall (In Iceland I note!) I have been to Stow before - I actually went househunting there several years ago - before I knew my family originated from there so quite spooky!!! Didn't check out the church ruins though .... I really hope there are lots of gravestones from the early 1800's and that one of them is for my gggg-gp's!!!! I think that would be amazing :D
If and when I get there i shall post a note! Thanks for the link too, bye for now,

I am logging in as elmca2 as my previous username and password were not recognised?? :? Well anyway I got to Stow, found the old graveyard but as expected there were no graves for my ancestors or at least not the ones I was looking for (Robert Young & Jane Murdoch both died 1834) - I was a bit downhearted at this but then I noticed a gravestone for a Jane Young so I took down all the details and to cut a long story short she was Robert & Jane's granddaughter - so although I didn't find a stone to mark the grave of R&J I felt that I was somehow led to this other grave and through this found that R&J had another son, Christopher (Jane Young's father), so it wasn't a wasted journey :)
