I found an entry for the 1891 census in Somerset which said against one household " Left on Saturday night and took schedule with them"!!

So many people were and some still are suspicious of any information collecting by the government. I met someone here not long ago who thinks that registering addresses for 911 (emergency call number) is so the government officials can come and pick us up. Also sometimes I think people avoided the census because they were embarassed about illegitimate offspring or didn't want to admit to them. I found several who were listed as the very young children of 60 and 70 year old grandparents and with one bigamist in the family, I'm betting he didn't answer the door!

Thanks everyone. On this subject it explains lots of things and has opened my eyes to a lot. I think as we trawl through paperwork on ancestors we forget about the times they were living in, and what was acceptable back then.
Im glad im not the only one with missing relies though. For whatever reasons they had, they have enriched my life and have certainly made the ones who have been found a joy. Even if it is ten years later.
