Wives Enumerated Under Their Maiden Name

The more I carry on with this transcription the more I understand why we have so much trouble sometimes finding our relies.

This eumerator is one of the worst I have come across

He shortens first names as much as possible. William is Wm. George is Geo. James is Jas. Margaret is Margt. to name but a few. A lot of the time he just uses the initial letter.

His spelling is atrocious and he is obviously dyslexic

The surname in many families being spelled differently in the one household.

Ah well, I'll keep plodding on

Can it possibly be worse than one I'm working on at the moment? I get the impression that ink was in short supply so the enumerator diluted his!

I can certianly empathise as a couple of nights ago I've finally just completed 1851 Dunfermline Landward for Freecen - a total of 4, 895 people..... never again!!

Just as you get used to one enumerator's style of hand writing and turn of phrase and wee quirks of interpretation of the "rules", the RD changes and you have to deal with the next guy, whose style is completely different!

However, it does give you a much better understanding of the area, how the census guidelines could be interpreted and why, as you say, we can sometimes not find folk!

Every little bit helps and it does give you something to do in the winter evenings when the football is on,which, this week,is every night
