Hi Maxie,
Maxie wrote: Mary Ann's parents are Thomas McGlinchy, a tailor and Ann Grant according to Mary Ann's death certificate; both are dead by 1862. So i'm not sure whether that is Mary Ann and Thomas together in the census - i'm not having much luck finding them myself.
Ann and Nancy are variations of the same name, so perhaps that is Ann Grant who is the head of household in 1841. Thomas may have already died. Is the "Lily" on Thomas Jr.'s death cert clear, or could it be "Nancy"?
All the best,
Sarah

Here's Thomas going back through the years with wife Janet, all at the same address. Note the creative transcriptions of the last name:

1891
44 George St, Glasgow Blackfriars
Thomas McGlinchy, 63, Head, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Harbour Porter
Janet McGlinchy, 54, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Office Cleaner

1881
44 George St, Glasgow Blackfriars
Thomas Mc Glincis, 52, Head, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Bread Vanman
Janet Mc Glincis, 48, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Cotton Mill Worker

1871
44 George St, Glasgow Central District
Thomas McLynchie, 42, Head, born Glasgow, Lanark, Labourer
Janet McLynchie, 32, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanark

So it wasn't Thomas who took in his sister's children. I still think it was James/Robert who had decided to be Thomas this time round! I picture him winking at his children and asking, "So, who shall we say we are this time?"

Cheers,
Sarah

The IGI has both marriages, but notice that Knight is Wright, and that even the spelling for Thomas gets creative.

THOMESS [sic] MCGLINCHY - JANET HUTCHESON
Marriage: 28 FEB 1868 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
THOMAS MCGLINCHY - MARGARET WRIGHT [sic]
Marriage: 15 DEC 1865 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Gina

Thought I'd double check the IGI for children and found an earlier one.

MARGARET MCGREGER
Birth: 22 JUL 1856 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Father: JAMES MCGREGER Mother: MARY ANN MCGLINCHY

Gina

As you may expect from Gina's information above, there is a death on SP for Margaret McGlinchey / Wright in 1867 in Glasgow.

The death certificate for Janet McGlinchy / Hutchison can be found on SP in Glasgow in 1905.

From these, Thomas McGlinchy's 1896 death can be found on SP, also in Glasgow.

In addition to Sarah's census information, Janet can be found on her own in 1901.

1901
44 George St, Glasgow Blackfriars
Janet McGlinchy, 60, Head, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Charwoman

All the best,

Hi all,

life has been a bit hectic recently so the family tree has had to take a back seat, but I just wanted to say thank you very much for everyone's help!

The McGregors remain quite the mystery! Or should I say Wilson or McGlinchy? And there seems little prospect of finding James aka Robert or whatever he decided to call himself each week!

Thanks again,

Maxie.

Hello Maxie,

RE: John McGregor b. Glasgow 1861

This John McGregor, son of James McGregor and Mary Ann McGlinchy, was a half-brother of
my grandmother, Catherine McGregor, b. 10 Dec 1877 in Glasgow.

I have recently received a photograph of James McGregor, father of John and Catherine.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Hi Melissa, and welcome to [talkingscot]

Maxie has not been on TalkingScot in some time, so if she opted to be notified of responses to her post, hopefully, she will be in touch.
