Hi Tracey,
You have been a great help, i have been looking at all the info you gave me with great interest.
The first sighting of Margaret in the 1861 census looks promising, it does not say she is a widow however it does say son and daughter in law ? but does not show anyone old enough to be married? confusing. Hellen and John would be new to me but both would have been born after the 1851 census - so it could be them. James and Isabella would have been old enough to have moved out. Also the census is in Perth but they could have moved back there from Glasgow after 1851. It has Dougal as an apprentice baker and on Margaret's (his mother) marriage cert is has her father's occupation as Baker, that could be a connection.
If anyone could narrow them down on SP in the 1861 census, i don't mind using 5 credits to look at the original. I end up spending loads on searching for the correct entry!

This might be her that you found also. They might have been flitting between Perth and Glasgow.

I posted both census places because most of the children were born in Partick and parents were born in Perth so covered all events just incase !

Looked for the men on 1871 but i am on a wild goose chase.
By now i would assume most are married and as i dont know this family like you do i havnt a clue of who the maybe's are, and is there a possibility that the others went to Ireland with James ? or James followed his siblings out ?.
Someone with good wild card skills might have the answer for what i cant find.

Hi Tracey,

Result - marriage cert of William Thomson and Isabella McFarlane 1857 in Perth! but both born in Partick! Father Dougald McFarlane (deceased) Mother Margaret Christie.
Well done Tracey, it's when people like yourself flag up another avenue to go down that makes this site unbeatable. Thanks a lot!
I wouldn't mind a help with the cert from anyone who fancies having a look especially addresses. I will put it on the gallery.

Thanks Paddyscar,

I was struggling with a few words i.e the Established church and the addresses in Partick.
The witnesses are good because i would imagine John Christie - might be Margaret's brother and that could help me find her family in the census. I know her father is James from her marriage cert.
Also i now know Dougald died 1857 or before that might help me also.

Thanks for the help,

Ailsa

Hi All,
Well, I narrowed down when Dougald may have died and and typed in how his name was written on Isabella's marriage cert (Dugald) and 1 match came up. Father Dugald - Mother Garvie.
Sadly it was his, he died in 1856 - however he committed suicide by drowning in the River Clyde. Never discussed in our family (and my mum is still alive, he would have been her gt gt grandfather).
I can't really make out what is says after the death report - i will post it and maybe someone can help me.
Also i have had no luck with the newspaper searches - can anyone who can find their way round them please have a look and see if there is any reports of it in the Newspapers. I would be very grateful.

Regards,

Ailsa

Parents: Dugald McFarlane, [looks like] Saw? Sharper?, deceased
Margaret McFarlane
Maiden name Christie (I'd agree it looks like Christie)

Was the father's occupation on the death entry? (its bugging me now! )
