1851 Census Lookup Request
Many thanks to all who assisted and responded.
The source of my information is indeed
http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/canadian_j ... field.html
It is the second time this article has reared its head in my WORKMAN research and, again, provides more questions than answers. Yes, the article does state "along with his daughter, Mary from a previous marriage". Mary was born circa 1853 probably at West Kilbride; corroborated by the phrase "when she was brought to Canada, and was about twenty in 1873".
If I have this correct, James WORKMAN (b. circa 1817) [see age at 1851 Census) married Elizabeth ADAM (b. circa 1828) [see age at 1851 Census] on 19 Oct 1850 at West Kilbride [ see IGI - I know].
Hugh WORKMAN (b. 1796, West Kilbride) married Catherine SHAW (unknown) is definately one of mine. Although I am unable to locate a James WORKMAN born circa 1817, I firmly believe they are of the same family. How many WORKMANs would there be in a small Ayrshire coastal village in 1800s that would NOT be related?
MORE digging required now - OPR for West Kilbride would be a good place to start for James' first marriage and second marriage to Elizabeth ADAM and Mary's birth, although any OPR find will not give me much data.
I have have an obituary from the local Ayrshire newspaper; The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald for James Workman, late of West Kilbride, died late 1872 at Moore Town, County Lambton, Canada West.
Thanks again all.
Kindest regards and thanks again to all.

Hi Jim,
Just curious
Sarah
Does it mention his wife and his alleged cause of death?jim mccreadie wrote: I have have an obituary from the local Ayrshire newspaper; The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald for James Workman, late of West Kilbride, died late 1872 at Moore Town, County Lambton, Canada West.

Hi Jim,
James of 1815 doesn't appear on the online IGI as West Kilbride is one of the many Scottish parishes where only the female births are listed for the OPR years (pre-1855). This is an anomaly of the online version of the IGI. The IGI on microfiche (found in a number of libraries), or on computer at LDS Family History Centres will have both the male and female births, as does ScotlandsPeople.
All the best,
AndrewP

Thanks Sarah and Andrew
Sarah: No mention of cause of death nor his wife Elizabeth. Where the name of the relatives was inserted (normally at the end) in the newspaper Death Notice, it says "Late of West Kilbride".
Andrew: Thanks for that tip! I maintain a "Tip" file in my genealogy folder so that one will join the others.
