Just to tidy this one up in case anyone is interested! Don't you just love it when things all come together.

Peter Gray, born Abernethy, Perthshire served in the 42nd Foot Regiment (Black Watch). Discharged age 33. Dates covered by records (at Kew) 1804 - 1816.

This explains why his eldest child Thomas was born 1804/5, then there were no more children till Janet, christened May 1818.

And googling has given me loads of info on the Battle of Quartre Bras and the 42nd.
