Hi Jan
If you've any problem reading the orignal census page you can upload it to the gallery here. The combined effort of the members here can usually work out what something says! (goodness knows, we get enough practice! )

best wishes
Lesley

Hi all,

I just uploaded the 1871 Census file. It's a doozy! Your guess will probably be better than mine!

Carol
That was very kind of you to spend your hard earned cash on trying to solve this one.

Best wishes

Looks to me like the occupation all belongs to the Master Baker:

Master Baker employing 2 vanmen, 2 boys and 2 shopgirls
followed by son Thomas who is a scholar.

Looks like this census taker thought he was to write a book! You're right Lesley. I took it that there were brackets surrounding the group of people he was employing, with 'Scholar' being tacked on at the end, explaining Thomas, son, aged 11.

Not a problem! I had a few credits and nothing much to do this evening. Nothing but basketball on the TV!

Still haven't figured out the 2 ? men.

Hi frances
You can also see why the Ancestry subscribers (human or otherwise...!) thought that the wife had an occupation - it is in her line.

A very good example indeed of why it is importnat to always see the original!

Best wishes

Hi Carol
I reckon they are vanmen - to deliver the goods.

Aha! I think you've nailed it Lesley! I just caught up with your edit and the other posts and had a second look at the certificate.

There are a few items in the Glasgow Herald that mention a baker by the name of Mathieson.

1871 - Wanted ad for good Table Hand placed by Wm. Mathieson, baker, 179 Eglington Street.
1875 - Mention of Mr. Wm. Mathieson, baker, 179 Eglinton Street, late Treasurer of Master Baker’s Friendly Society of Glasgow. (late as in previous)
1880 - A couple of wanted ads for servants by Mathieson (‘s), Baker, Crosshill.
1893 - Sale of a new Bakehouse at 654 Eglinton Street, lately occupied by William Mathieson, baker.
1900 - April 12th, there’s a death notice for a Wm. Mathieson, baker, of Victoria Road, Crosshill, in his 70th year.

Is that any help with anything?
