I didn't realise you could get cheap vouchers. Could have saved a small fortune! I guess I'd better nip down to Elgin library and join SP again!

Thanks for the gen.

As far as I'm aware, and according to my local library, the first start-up card needs to be used IN the library when you create a SP account. You cannot use an existing SP account - it needs to be one you created when using the start-up voucher. In order to use the PCs in any library I know of, you have to be a member of that library. Some libraries appear to be easier to join that others e.g. one library I know of I cannot join, despite being born in that town, because I live outside the area, do not work in the town and do not pay rates (local taxes) to that particular area, although I was a member of that same library when I was a student in the area, as I lived there then! However, another library allowed me to join despite not living in their area....

After that, the top up cards can be used either in the library or at home all using the same SP account that was set up on the visit to the library.

Best wishes
Lesley
Hi Lesley,

You don't have to use the start up card at the library - it can be used at home to create a new account.

Culture and Sport Glasgow are very happy to let anybody join the library, as long as they have proof of address, but you do not have to be library member to buy a Scotland's People voucher.

Hope that makes sense. :D

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette

That is interesting because my local library stressed that the account had to be started up at the library - I wonder if they have picked it up wrongly or if it is different depending on where you are...?

I see there is an article about the scheme here, but it does not go into detail:

Hi Lesley

I am not a member of any Library and when I bought mine no one said anything about using it there, I just took it home with me. So it looks like different areas are taking a different stance on that.

Hi Lesley,

Seems like the Mitchell have the wrong end of the stick as they are available in many other libraries apart from the Mitchell! The vouchers can be purchased from any library which sells them and taken home. You do need the start-up one first, so if they'd run out then you're out of luck! However, some libraries will try and use them as an excuse to keep you there but you don't need to. The only condition is that the discount vouchers have to be bought in person. Aberdeenshire Libraries say that the discount vouchers are for personal use only and that a disclaimer must be signed to that effect.

So, some libraries might try and persuade you stay but that's not a condition of the vouchers themselves. Different libraries might have different policies but their websites should tell you more.

My son is currently at uni in Scotland. Would he be able to buy a start up voucher for me from his uni library?

Just a thought :)

Hi Meg
I may be wrong here, but I thought the scheme was aimed at public libraries. It would be interesting to know if University Libraries are also included.

Best wishes

Hi Lesley,

Yes that was what I presumed too but then when reading through this thread I had the thought - or should I say hope? - that uni libraries might be included!
He'll be wishing himself elsewhere soon the number of little errands I've sent him on - visits to graveyards, photos of addresses!

Best wishes,
Meg

As a student living in Scotland he can access any public library, and yes I'm sure he will be able to buy the vouchers just like everyone else should be able to.
