Hi Raymond,

The spelling of the name varies between Gemmell, Gammell, Gemmill, Gammill, all of those with one L, all of those with one M, all of those with one M AND one L, and even the name Gamble and its variants.

The spelling depended on who was doing the writing. Different registry clerks would spell the name in various ways, and often our ancestors either didn't read or write and so it wasn't corrected, or they didn't speak up.

Now, where's the grandfather's marriage details so I can see what comes up? We ideally need you to tell us his parents' names, his and his father's occupation, his bride's name and her parents' names, her father's occupation. Oh and of course, ages and addresses! From this we can hunt down a lot of information.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply.....I have the medal cards for...
James Gemmell (my grandfather) K.I.A. 20/10/1914
Daniel Gemmell (his brother)Died of wounds 11/08/1918
Henry Gemmell (brother i think) Waiting on word from the Fusiliers.

Births in Ayrshire between 1883-1886.
Ardrossan 1883 James Stevens Gemmell.
Stewarton 1885 James Gemmell.
Ayr 1886 James William Gemmell.

Irvine Ayrshire-19th Feb 1885 James Gemmell....
Father John Gemmell (a tailor journeyman)
Mother Mary Gemmell nee Coghill.
This was the only James Gemmell with any connection with Lancashire.

The Daniel Gemmell marriage in Salford seems to confirm that the three brothers stayed in Lancashire.

John and Mary after 1891 is a mystery .. :?:

Hi Nina,
All i had was the Father John...I thought it may be Mary Coghill but hope that the Fusiliers may find something.

Is this the family in the English 1891 at Cheetham, Manchester Lancashire?

John Gemmell, Head, 30, Tailor, born Scotland
Mary Gemmell, Wife, 28, -, Scotland
Daniel Gemmell, Son, 9, Scholar, Scotland
James Gemmell, Son, 6, Scholar, Scotland
Henry, Son, 2, -, Scotland

If so, we can see that the family had possibly only moved to England within the past two or so years, as Henry was born in Scotland. Finding them before or after this date is proving difficult!

To be sure of his mother's surname you need to get one of the children's birth registrations.

Hi Nina,
I have not seen this before but it looks what i have been looking for as i feel that the father John and three sons enlisted in the Fusiliers...My nephew in Salford is going to the Manchester Reg. office this week so i will ask him to look into the sons Registrations and see what he can find.
