Thank you Lesley and Puffin. I have the information now. Dear Lord, what a holocaust. I hope he went quickly.

Holocaust ? Quite !!

A few months ago I was in Banchory for the wedding of a grand-niece.

Just across from the hotel where I stayed was the monument to the local territorial regiment of the Gordon Highlanders, - showing that not far short of a 1,000 men gave their lives in WWI.

How can we conceive of the effect on the society in this area of that level of loss?, never mind that there would have been something around 3,000 or 4,000 wounded involved, both physical and mental?...........

Lorna,

John Duncan - on the Great War Forum - has compiled a list of all Cameron Highlanders killed on the first day of the Battle of Loos (26 Sep 15). See here:

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forum ... meron+loos

As a Private soldier, it is unlikely that he is mentioned in any War Diaries or other military correspondence - unless he was recommended for a gallantry award. However, if he is mentioned, the folks on the GWF will find him for you in short order. They provided a fantastic amount of information when I enquired about my great grandfather; killed on 25 Sep 15 when serving in 10th Battalion Scottish Rifles.

And if you want any information about the battle you could do worse than buying Niall Cherry's tour de force 'Most Unfavourable Ground - the Battle of Loos 1915'.

Good luck.

Roxy
I'll think of something appropriate soon!

Hi Roxy

I would very much like to search that list but the War Graves site just WILL NOT LET ME IN. They like everything I do on my registration form except my copying of their two words. I have tried 6 times, trying to be careful about capitals - do they want it as 2 words (no) - do they want it as 1 word (no) ](*,) ](*,) . What DO they want - not me apparently

Any ideas?
