The author of this fairly recent book called it “The Great Hoax of 1872”. They got that bit wrong and the story about the jilted printer could be a load of rubbish for all we know.

On the April 1st note, our local newspaper has reported a rather good one. The big American WENDY'S chain is about to open an all new outlet on a by-pass route through Hamilton City. Their 2.4 x 1.2m sign saying Comming Soon with all the company logos etc on it, and requesting potential staff to apply through a web address appeared over night, on the approaches to the coastal town of Raglan. It completely covered a local land agency sign, and was quite a talking point, until is was discovered it had been removed from Hamilton.
