Heather
Is it possible for you to post here and/or email me your understanding in your locality of the extant poor relief records where there are inspectors' reports?
It's an area of particular interest to me, and while I'm well up on what exists in the West of Scotland, I hadn't previously heard of such records up your way.
As far as I'm aware the poorhouses in the whole general were Rathven (Parish Hospital) for Banffshire, Latheron Combination & Thurso Combination for Caithness, Inverness, Long Island Combination, Skye Combination, Morayshire Combination in Elgin, Black Isle Combination (Fortrose), Easter Ross Combination (Tain), & Lewis Combination

Hi David
We only have poor relief records here but some of them are missing but we have most of them. These records are all on microfilm and are held at the Heritage Centre which at present is housed in Elgin Library.
Hope that helps if note then let me know.

Hi Heather
This is the other William Donaldson NM036621 (says married to Mary Shand) that confused me as the details are very similar to my William. My William NM248605 (married to Mary Shaw) died 4th October 1874 at 55 High Street Elgin (and also c1860 lived at 145 High St Elgin)- although this isnt stated on his biography details on Moray. There is a poor relief reference on the bottom of this, i dont know if they are the ones you sent me. But can you see what i mean ? It looks like there has been a mix up between them or just the wifes name of Shand being a typo resulting in two different entries ?.
Sorry for the confusion

Hello Heather.
Ive tried to pinpoint via childrens births where they could have been in 1851. The closest i have is Elizabeth who was born according to the poor relief records anytime between 1850 - 1856 ( and because of the varied years its been a nightmare financially on S/P ! ) her death puts her birth year at 1857 and census puts it at 1854. I have found no evidence of more than one Elizabeth born to them so far. But either way her birth place is Rathven as were half the others and the other half Elgin. before this it was my gtx2 in 1847. There is a big gap in birth years so this is the best i can do unfortunaltely.
The census is all i can think of right now unless there are birth records there that that i cant find on S/P not knowing exactly when or where or on the IGI but am too embarrased to ask as you have done so much already. But looks like i just did
My family came up to Elgin on Wednesday and Margaret was a great help to them and thanks to your information sent they were able to find things quite easily and had some of the poor relief and the 1861 census printed for me.
As always i am very greatful for your kind offer but really only if you can and dont go out of your way im in no rush
Thank you
Tracey
I hope this makes sence as i have had a lot of distractions whilst writing this
