Thank you all for your input and thank you Andrew for the PM.

I have taken time over the weekend to look it over and to do some more research.

This is what I have come up with.

Richard Campbell was born on the 18th January 1860 , his parents were John Campbell, Cowfeeder and Helen Campbell M.S. Cruickshank.

Richard's parents were married 1850 in Carnwath, where a number of Richard's siblings were born. The 1861 shows Richard as having been born in Edinburgh, the 1881 as Carnwath . There is no record of a Richard Campbell being born in Carnwath in 1860.

Richard's parents are buried in Corstorphine Old Parish Church Yard. John 1895 and Helen 1886.

Richard marries Margaret Spiers on the 24th July 1885 in Edinburgh. They have a son John born 14th May 1887 in Corstorphine. That is when the trail goes cold. I cannot find any trace of Richard and his family after this time.

I have had a look at The Ellis Island records without any success.

Any suggestions as to where to look next would be appreciated.

Frances :)

Spoke to the person today who is interested in the Campbell family. He informs me that the Richard he is looking for was indeed illegitimate , looks like the family in the 1891 census could be the right one after all.

More research required.

Thanks again for all help. :)

Regards

Frances
