Hello Caroline and Annette
I had a quick look when I was at the Mitchell today, your Richard Nicholson is there, suffering from bronchitis.
He was born in Gilbertstown Co Donegal and his wife was Martha Crossan, He was separated from his wife for 3 years and lived in Drygate Model.
The record has lots of interesting details - a daughter Mary Ann 17yrs working as a weaver in America, another daughter Catherine is married to John Scott - "a drunken lazy fellow (won't work)".
the same page has a record for Richards' widow Martha Crossan also suffering from bronchitis - "A widow of 48yrs Housewife - has done nothing for 2 years". :-s
I'm sure Annette will agree that it's a very good record with lots of info.
The reference number for ordering a copy is D-Hew 10/6/54 #69 .... (there are two pages)
Jim

Hi Alison and Annette
I couldn't find any record for Ann Cunningham or Riddell in the Glasgow poor relief records, there were a few Ann's but none that matched your dates.
sorry :(

Hello Jim and Caroline,

Mmmm..... I'm in a real quandry now.
I would normally transcribe an application verbatim but Jim has given a lot of info.
Is this enough for you Caroline or would you like it transcribed?
Either way is fine by me.

Regards,
Annette M

That's why I was suprised as I'd never previously heard of extant inspectors' reports for the Dumbarton Combination. That's not to say that there aren't such, somewhere, - there are still regular reports of amazing material being found deep in cellars and way up in the lofts. It's only a few years ago when the records for the Mauchline and surrounding area "surfaced".

But don't hold out any hope for the Edinburgh records. They are known to have been incinerated, and if anything had survived for Dundee and Aberdeen you'd think it would have been found by now.

David,

The Friends of Dundee City Archives have an ongoing project indexing the poorhouse applications. They have a great database with reference numbers at http://www.fdca.org.uk/

Annette

Many thanks for that.

Unfortunately, from a look at the site that you recommended, it appears to be the case that these records are simple listings of the names of those who have received some form of relief, but are not the "mini biographies" that are provided by the Glasgow and many other West of Scotland surviving, very detailed poor inspectors' reports.........

Hi Jim.

That's brilliant! I didn't realise that a Poorhouse record could contain so much amazing info. Even just the excerpts have solved a few mysteries and opened up more leads at the same time.

Now I have an idea why Richard Nicholson was down on the 1871 census as being born in Dingwall as opposed to Ireland. He must have said Donegal to the enumerator and he's interpreted it as Dingwall.

Thanks for taking the time to do that Jim it means a lot to me.

Hi Annette,

Thanks for yet another generous offer!

I'm hoping to get the original at some point, but I must admit that I'd love to see the whole thing just now as I'm quite excited by the info from Jim.
I'm dying to know what it says about Richards other daughter Martha, who was my g.g.grandmother, and her husband John Taylor(who died in Dumbarton Poorhouse).

So what I'm saying is yes I'd love it transcribed, but I'm just worried that there's too much info as Jim says it's 2 pages.

Have a look anyway Annette and you can decide once you've seen it. Even an abridged version would be helpful.

Enjoy your day at the Mitchell!

Hello David,

I have received a transcription of one and, although it was not as detailed as some of the Glasgow applications I've viewed, it did give me previously unknown information about the person.
It's definitely worth a shot if you find an ancestor in the index.

Annette M
