1851 census

Post by Jack » Fri Oct 14, 2005 6:05 pm

Hi Audrey,
It looks the right family, except father James not as born Lesmahagow...
Son James is as 10, but probably meant to be 10mos, as he is below the 2 girls and not as a scholar.

Hi Jack,

Thank you for that, I am now slightly worried as both James and his wife were born in Lesmahagow,

regards,
Audrey

James McGowan, b Blantyre

Post by Jack » Sun Oct 16, 2005 9:32 pm

Thanks Audrey,
This would mean that the James McGOWN who married Jean LOCHART isn't your GG-Gr uncle after all.
Here's the basics for 1861 Glasgow census. [details now added]
--
1861 cens 644-3 Ed 71 p 14 (Bridgeton - Calton)
14 Muslin St.
James McGOWAN, head, marr, 40, cotton spinner, operative, b Blantyre, LKS
Jane McGOWAN, wife, marr, 39, --------, b Neilston, RFW
Margaret McGOWAN, daur, 13, scholar, b Glasgow, LKS
James McGOWAN, son, 10, scholar, b Glasgow, LKS
Mary McGOWAN, daur, 5, --------- b Glasgow, LKS
Jessie McGOWAN, daur, 2, ------ b Glasgow, LKS
--
The marriage below may be your GG-GF Andrew's 1st cousin James?, who's parents were William McGOWAN & Marion TORRANCE.
They too had a son Andrew - born abt 1830 Lesmahagow; so just a wee bit younger than your own GG-GF Andrew.
But i dare say you know all this!

JAMES MCGOWAN
MARION BARR
Marriage: 07 JUN 1867 Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland

Jack
ps, do you need the 1851 & 1861 Lesmahagow censuses?

emegration to Australia

Post by ASGROOMBRIDGE » Mon Oct 17, 2005 9:01 am

Hi Jack,

If that is possible yes please, all the research given to me re James and the Australian connection came from a gentleman in New Zealand who assured me that his James was the son of Thomas McGowan and Margaret Knox of Lesmahagow, and that Janes was the daughter of Robert Lockhart of Clannoch Dyke Lesmahagow and Agnes Potter born Livingstone West Lothian.

I seem to be in a very big muddle with a large portion not being my family OH dear. Will start to sort this out tonight.

My direct email address is
ASGROOMBRIDGE@AOL.COM

Thank you so much for your help

Hi Tracey,

Do you think I go around giving details of my covert operations to just anyone? :D

I have absolutely no idea. I found it on a google search, the main link did not work, the cached version worked after a while and trying to get to the main page was impossible. Then it was in that damned PDF file format which makes me question the existence of god.... unless it was sent to try us. [-o<

If you want to search for someone in particular send me a PM with the names, rough dates, areas if you know, and I'll have a go for you. It seems everyone elses relatives turn up, it's just mine that appear to be a figment of my imagination...... perhaps I don't really exist at all :-$ !

You're presently No.1 on my list for final proof of the alien abduction theory.

Please keep me posted when the little green men knock at the door, and have a close look to see if they are wearing shirts and ties, and sporting those black plastic badges with the names in white ...........

Some years ago, I'd been on line for most of the day capturing images for lectures. I was on the LDS site about 7pm when the doorbell rang. I answered, to find these two young gentleman, immaculately dressed, with those badges, and more polite than most of their contemporaries in the UK will ever be.

When they had very briefly explained their missionary efforts on behalf of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints what else could I say but, - this was in the days of expensive dial-up access, "You'll have to excuse me, but I'm online to Salt Lake City!" !! The look on their faces was quite incredibleand had to be seen to be believed.

Guaranteed to be a true story, - ask my wife, - I didn't stop laughing for a long time.

And in case anyone takes this in a negative sense in relation to the LDS, - not in any way whatsoever is that intended, - without the activities of the LDS we'd be in dire straits without IGI/BVRI etc., and while I am of a different faith, I've always found the welcome in Salt Lake City at the GSU/LDS Library quite wonderful, and have been asked on three occasions to lecture to the assembled staff of the British Section on various Scottish subjects.
