1851 census for Glasgow

Post by Rachel » Fri Oct 21, 2005 2:56 pm

 Jack, this is naughty of me but you seem to have the 1851 census well sussed. Could you do a lookup for me. I cannot find this chap except on the 1851 census and would like to know more about him.
He would appear to be living with his parents Robert and Amillia? Young and a brother Alexander Young. I thought I had all of that family until this chappie appeared =
Forename Surname Age Birthplace Parish Enum Page Line
George Young 16 St Johns 562 16 10 14
If it is not asking too much would you have a look next time you are at the Mitchell. I do envy all you Glaswegians who have such a facility on your doorstep.
Regards Rachel.

Hi Rachel,
I've opened another thread - just to keep yours separate from Caroline's family.

Hi Caroline,

Meant to ask - were Andrew STRANG's parents, William & Agnes, as deceased on his 1855 MC?
What was William's occupation, and Agnes' maiden name?
May i ask why you think they came from New Monklands?
Do you know of any siblings?

It's just that i can't see them in a local census.

Jack
ps, maybe Andrew was just one of those folk that had many different occupations.

Hi again Jack,

Yes ANDREW STRANGs parents were WILLIAM and AGNES LANG. William was a blacksmith on Andrews MC and a labourer on his DC. They were both deceased in 1855

On the IGI there are birth dates for both and a marriage date which have been submitted and are just approximations. However there are birth dates for 2 other children, Margaret (b.1813) and James (b.1815) which are not submitted. There is no record of Andrews birth but on his MC it says he was born in Airdrie (I've just checked back on my notes I took from this)

One of the reasons I was trying to get more census info was to find out if I was on the right lines.

Andrews first marriage to Janet Spence could be wrong as it said on his 1855 MC that he had been married once and had one child and this was the only marriage entry I could find that seemed relevant.

Anyway hope you can make sense out of what I've written and don't be afraid to say if you can't!

Hi Caroline,
Still nothing.
As William & Agnes married 1812 they'd be at least 55yrs old by 1851. By no means elderly, but always the possibility they had died by then.

So looks like a wait for the 1841 census index from SP to come online in the hope of finding Andrew with his parents in that year.
I'm just sorry i've been unable to help.
