Hi Heather,

I've done a bit of checking for you.

The birth certificate of Catherine Waterston Menzies in 1868 indicates that her parents were Peter Menzies, Carter and Ann Stevens and that they married on December 7th 1866 in Edinburgh. The marriage certificate that Jean found is also dated 7th December 1866 and is for a marriage between Peter Menzies and Ann Stevenson. I think it is safe to assume that Ann Stevens and Ann Stevenson are one and the same and that these are the parents of Catherine Waterston Menzies (1868) and George (1869).

I agree with Jean that this couple have no links with Peter the Musician.

In 1871 Peter Menzies, Carter, appears to be living as a Boarder at 6 Shepherds Court Canongate. He is aged 29 (aged 24 on the 1866 marriage cert.) and is described as married, though there is no sign of his wife. He is in the household of John Guild (also a Carter) and his wife Ann.

Catherine Waterston Menzies appears to have died in 1868 and there is also a possible death of George Menzies in Edinburgh between 1869 and 1871. Jean notes that Ann Menzies/Stevenson died in 1871, though I can't find this entry??

Peter Menzies, Carter, died on 22nd November 1895 aged 52. There is no mention of Ann Stevens(on) on the death certificate. He is described as married to Catherine O'Neil. Jean has quoted the 1881 census entry for this couple. I can find no evidence of a marriage between Peter and Catherine and son Henry, born 1875, is illegitimate so I assume the previous children were similar. However the birth cert does confirm that Catherine's maiden name was O'Neil.

Peter Menzies was born about 1842. The 1841 census for 22 Jamaica Street, Canongate, Edinburgh lists George Menzies, Hackney Coachman age 30, born outside Midlothian: Janet Menzies 27 born Midlothian and Alison Menzies age 6 born Midlothian. The igi show Alison Menzies daughter of George Menzies and Janet Gill born 1836 in Edinburgh. The 1866 marriage certificate for Peter and Ann gives his parents as George Menzies Cabman and Jessie Menzies m/s Gill dec'd. The death certificate in 1895 gives Peter's parents as George Menzies, Carter and Janet Guild(informant was his sister in law so she may have got the surname slightly wrong). I'm pretty certain that the Peter who was married to Ann Stevens(on) is the same one who was later with Catherine O'Neil. He is not therefore the Peter who was with Margaret Watt in 1901 as he was dead by then.
