Hullo Ian

Yes, there are burial records. Where they are to be found would depend on the town or area you are interested in.

For example, North Lanarkshire records are kept at:
North Lanarkshire Council
Cemeteries Administration Office
Old Edinburgh Road
Bellshill
ML4 3JS

Tel: 01698 506 301
Fax: 01698 506 309

Glasgow Parks department recently informed me that much of their archive material is held on microfiche at the Mitchel Library in Glasgow.

Other Ts members can probably tell you what is available and where in their area of interest.

Regards
Catriona

hi lesley, many thanks for reply,i have all the monumental inscriptions for around there but of course many people didn't have a grave stone,or couldn't afford one, but the actual burials must be recorded somewhere, probably dingwall in this instance.
have you ever come across inscriptions for sutherland, can't seen to find any.

Hi Folks

We need to distinguish between monumental inscriptions, - i.e. the records of the inscriptions on gravestones; and public cemetary lair records, normally held by the current local government authority, which can record the purchaser of the lair, - the grave space, - and subsequent usage of the lair, often including the name of the person buried. For a deep grave, over a period of some decades, quite a few people could be buried in the same lair.

thanks david, it is the records of actual place where the person is buried i am trying to find, the register house doesn't show them as far as i can see.,so they must be held as you say at local gov. authority.
the m.i's only show the actual commemorative stones, but there are so many unmarked lairs, which must be recorded somewhere.
my g.parents are buried in the old churchyard avoch but have no gravestone that can be found.
