Oh my goodness this is such a lot of information, Mary! Thank you so much for taking the time to do the research for me. I hope it IS my James...it would explain a lot about his life.

It will be a help when I find out who his mother and father truly are. I will see what the Poorhouse record says, and if not there, I will have to order his marriage certificate and hope that the details are there. My funds are not good...which is why I haven't got it yet.

He may have lied about his birthplace, but I can't think why he would...

But thank you again so much for your efforts! I do hope it pays off...I would be so excited to have such a colourful ancestor, even if he was a scoundrel, hehe!

There is an application for Catherine made in 1886 but unfortunately there was 'no production' in the archives today, ie no one to get the books. At least you know one is there and I will look when I can.
I can tell you she was born in Wicklow, Ireland in 1836 according to the index.
There were lots of James McCormack/ick applications. Most were born in Ireland (none in Liverpool). Hopefully I shall be able to narrow it down when I see Catherine's.

Kind regards,

Hello again Nina,

Only managed half a look at Catherine's application as it it quite long and I ran out of time. I will be going again at the weekend armed with my digital camera this time. Saw a lady doing today and couldn't believe I had never thought of it before.

The part I was able to transcribe is slightly confusing. Have you looked at the death record of a James McCormick age 37 in 1881?
I've checked SP, there is one and according to Catherine it was her husband James and yet you say he died in 1902 :? What age was the man who died in 1902?
The other thing is there is no mother's name given for James.

Anyway hopefully all will be revealed when I look at it again.

Kind regards,
Annette

Hi nelmit,

Although I do have the death certificate for James McCormick who died in the city poorhouse in 1902, wife Catherine McTague (which has been spelled a LOT of different ways), I looked at SP. I found two deaths for 1881, one aged 41 and the other 22.

I discounted the younger but had a look at the older one, and no he is not mine. So I am certain he died on 26 November 1902 of 'senile decay' at the City Poorhouse. Informant was Mary McKinlay, daughter. All checks out.

Catherine's date of death was 16 June 1901 at the City Poorhouse too. Informant was S. McCormick, son.

I suspect that Catherine lied...perhaps it WAS James down there in that prison barge in England...and she 'wrote him off'....or was too embarrassed that her husband was a criminal. Speculation of course, but I have seen worse porky pies than this, hehe.

If this Catherine is the only one there, then it HAS to be James' wife. Do the children and her date and place of marriage that appear in my post above feature in her transcript? That may be a way of identifying her, too...but of course you know that, as you are so good at doing this!

I have loads of info on her children, such as their spouses names and their children, so if any of that might help better indentify Catherine, just let me know and I will post the info.

The digital camera sounds like a good idea. I have heard of people doing that at the LDS centres as well.

I would be so grateful for whatever you can find out...you are amazing to be doing this for people halfway across the world!

Thanks sincerely,

Nina

Nina,

Perhaps I read the details about James incorrectly.
Catherine was living with her daughter Mrs. McKinlay when she applied for education for Joseph who was born 20.5.75.

The application is pretty lengthy with lots of details - I did see prison mentioned and I also noticed the son in the army - Have I transcribed something about him before. :?:

I will go on Saturday and look again.

You'll get the details of this application yet!

Regards,
Annette

PS Catherine said James was born in Liverpool.

Ohhh wow, that is definitely HER! I am looking forward too seeing what she says. Lots of detail....yippee!

I have Joseph's bithday as January 20 1875...but her daughter Mary Jane was indeed married to David McKinlay by 1886...and they had two children that I know at the time of Catherine's application.

I haven't any knowledge yet of a son in the army but if so it was either Samuel James who was a tailor by trade, or William (mt gg grandfather) who was a slater's labourer, according to what I have. Samuel was married by 1886 with two children at least, but not William.

And a birthplace for James...that's great! And a mention of preison....the plot thickens!

I am on the edge of my seat here, hehe! Can't wait to see what it says.

Thanks SO much again for doing this!

Nina

You wouldn't get away with the digital camera method in Edinburgh Central Library. I've seen someone be told off for doing so. They should have been paying for photocopying.

In other words, if you are a new to a library, before you start flashing (with your camera  ) check what is the policy of the library, - some do allow digital cameras, - an increasing number, in fact, - but some don't.

As with anything else like that the Golden Rule is "If in doubt, ask" :!:

Hi all,Paisley Library charges 1pound 5pence per digital copy from poor law books.Ledgers are quite big so usually page divided into two, this would cost 2pounds 10pence per page.Great copies. Mitchell books seemed to be smaller and for 2 computer copies(2 pages)plus postage it was 1pound50p inc postage.Slight difference in quality but still good for the money.
Cheers Nancy.

Andrew,

I was really surpised and watched her for ages, waiting for the archivist to say something, before talking to her about it. She, like myself, used to transcribe the records she viewed till recently when she was given permission to use her camera.
The particular record she was photographing was written on a paper almost like tissue and these are always hard to read. When copied other records show through. The digital copy on her camera was amazing quality.
I know the people who I transcribe records for can buy photocopies at 50p each plus postage (and I know lots of them do anyway) but I quite enjoy giving them an insight to the record which can take weeks to be sent out. Taking a photograph instead of transcribing then typing it up will be great for me. Although The Mitchell now has wireless internet access and I was going to start using my husband's laptop and just type them up.

I would think the archivist's time would be worth more than the 50p charged for copying and I can assure you I pay GCC plenty in council tax to justify any loss of revenue.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Page 3 is a bit fuzzy but I think you can still read it alright.

Remember to keep refering to the dates at the left hand side. Any questions just ask.
